Poultice

Out of interest.....

How close would you poultice to a joint? Someone put a poultice on their horses hock last night and the wound was about 1 inch above the hock on the inside of the leg. I personally would have been very cautious about this because of the joint fluid and probably got the vet out for advise, but just wondered what your opinion would have been?

I have poulticed joints before!

Never seems to hurt, but highly unlikely to keep everything in place.

I had a horse with and injury on the front of the back leg above the hock. Virtually impossible to keep anything on it and I had to gaffer tape and elastoplast it in the end!

Joint fluid is very easy to distinguish, even if you havent seen it before. The wound would generally look oily, rather than bloody/gammy.

it depends on the joint. some joints have fluid filled capsules which extend beyond the joint and so near there I wouldn't be happy. Other joints don't and so quite close would be ok.

on the wound -- a poulice draws out infection -- thats what a poutice does so it has to be on the wound itself and a vet will tell you that

they normally use animalintex this can be done hot or cold
