It depends a bit on where the infection is. the last one here took 10 days before I could put a dry dressing on it and another few days before I could turn him out again.

Thanks to warm wet weather this season I have been the abscess queen and have really developed my skills at finding the abscess and getting it to drain swiftly.

Poulticing by itself I’ve not found overly successful at drawing out the abscess. Hot tubbing in Epsom salts for 10-20mins softens the sole whilst drawing the abscess and if you clean the sole really well you can usually see visually where the abscess is trying to come out.

Invest in a set of hoof testers as well so you can identify where the abscess is located.

If through hot tubbing it has burst - great, try to get it to drain as much as possible before poulticing. If not, poultice and hope it draws and bursts, otherwise repeat the hot tubbing twice daily until it comes out.

I no longer let vets or farriers dig big holes in my horses hooves. It makes a mess and opens the hoof up to further infection post the abscess clearing up.

Approx 3 days after the horse is sound again, if there is still an exit hole I pop hoof stuff or artimud in it changing it every couple of days until the hole has grown out.

I usually ask my farrier to have a look as he is conservative with his hoof knife. If he finds pus it takes 2/3 days to clear and I'll kep it covered for another day or 2 depending on weather. If the farrier can't see where the abcess is I hot tub with Epsom salts 3 times a day and poultice overnight. If I didn't get a result in a couple of days I would speak to a vet.

are you hot and wet poulticing? It takes a whole for the hoof to soften and it to come out yes, it may be worth getting your farrier or vet to come and have a dig and see of they can find anything to get it started off draining.
