Poulticing with Nappies

I think my TB has got an abscess in each of his front frogs. I've got some nappies that I have been dry poulticing with for the last 24 hours but other then blood nothing else has come out so I'm thinking I should probably wet poultice.

Can you wet poultice with a nappy? Do you just add warm water?

Erm....the only way I use a poultice with a nappy is use it as padding.
I poultice with naf hoof shaped poultices, then vet wrap it then nappy then duct tape over the top.

Also you might want to speak to vet as it might new help draining.

Short answer no, you will need to use animalintex or similar for a hot wet poultice imo.

But I would still use the nappy on top to secure and pad.

That's what I tend to do, or put a piece of animalintex in between.... I just make sure I put plenty of vetwrap over and then gaffer tape over that!

Good luck with poulticing! Just as an afterthought, if you are getting blood, would there be a puncture wound there rather than an abcess?

Hot salty water on the nappy, much cheaper than animalintex!

Mud - There is a small puncture wound which I thought might be the track to the abscess but no puss so far

I have always hot poulticed with hot salt water on animalintex first (after cleaning area thoroughly of course - preferably with diluted hibiscrub). Then a nappy over that.

To keep clean and dry especially if still turning out place and old feed bag cut to size over the nappy and tape up with strong duct tape.

Repeat twice a day.

Hot tubbing with epsom salts then I just put a bit of warm wet animalintex on then a bit of hibi on the nappy and a splash of hot water that on then a cross and tie to the leg with vetwrap then gaffa tape/silagetpae over the lot

The nappy is great - but as a layer on top of what ever poultice you use - animalintex / bran / epsom salts et al. My vets approve - but also have told me that to use silage tape to hold everything in place is a no no - because everything gets far too hot....you do need to allow the foot to breathe a bit as well. Also don't turn out with a nappy on the foot - if the horse breaks the lining you get that horrible gel thing going on - which is not good. Stabled you can control that a bit - but do change the poultice / nappy every 24 hours.

I've been told that animaletex & nappies are made of the same thing except the crystals in a nappy are larger & able to absorb more water.

I poultice using a newborn nappy soaked in hot, salty water.

That's a very good point! I always waited until the nappy/animalintex had cooled somewhat to tape up properly - do you think this would still get too hot from the heat just generated by the hoof itself? Never had an issue with it myself but can see the possible complications...

I've done this for years. Mine lives out and I wrap the outer bit in haylage wrapper and lot's of gaffa tape. Always worked for me.
