My horse has an injured hoof as some if it got ripped away when his shoe came off, and it has become infected. The farrier recommended poulticing it until the infection has passed but i have never done this before.
What do i need to poultice his foot? The crack is at the back of his hoof.
Do i need to keep him in?? Can it get wet??
Also i read somewhere the shoe has to come off to poultice his foot, but the farrier didnt take off his shoe, the infection isnt under the shoe though...

Sorry million and one questions!

Also, any ideas to keep him entertained in his stable? x

I'm going throught his right now with my horse.
This is what I do.
Shoe off
Cut poultice to size out over area.
Cut a size of veterinary gamgee to cover bottom of hoof up sides of hoof to just inder the fetlock.
Attach this with good amounts of vetwrap up over and around the pastern.
Buy some duct tape or similar water proof tape and wrap plenty of layers over the vetwrap up to just below fetlock, this holds it all in place stops water getting in and stops it wearing through.
Change this every 24 hours.
Wet poultice for 2 days then dry until no more puss comes out. Then keep covered until the hole / area is well healed.
I turn my horse out and she is fine it all stays put.

Good Luck.

hi Ive recently had an abcess, the vet took off the shoe and dug it out, however the farrier said that she didnt dig deep enough and he dug it more hoof was soaked in epsom salts with warm water, then I soaked a poltice in warm water, you can buy hoof shaped ones from your local tack shop, beware though some charge 5 -6 pound but i got mine for 1.99, three in a pack, called animalintex, the poltice was put on with pressure to enable the drawng, then i used a crape type disposable bandage as these have a sticking effect, then i used the grey tape not hte black on cause its more for electrical and is difficult to work with , this was done twice a day for one week then after i dry poulticed for one week changing only once a day, if you look at the poltice you will notice greeny type smelly pus then it turns black, my black smith put on a bar shoe when finished to protect the area and i was advised to plug the hole with cotton wool, this can be put in with vasaline to help it stay in. I then turned her out you have to be careful not to get the hole muddy in the first instance so turning out would be dodgy if its wet and the poultice came off. also one work of warning for you be careful when you are bending over try crouching because i caused myself a back problem and was off work for two months because of the pain , please be careful hope this helps good luck , lots of horses have abcesses and they recover really well once its released.

thanks for the advice, although im very confused as to why the farrier didnt take the shoe off when he told me to poltice it...does this mean i am able to do it without taking the shoe off??

maybe he forgot!

my horse had an absess in his toe and had shoe on still, as it stopped the sore part from touching the ground so much. i tubbed for 3 days (foot in water as hot as your horse will tolerate and salts) and polticed with kalolin on brown paper. this was put on foot, then a pad under it, then a feed bag (which was plastic) then tied that with bailing twine and then put bangdage on leg the correct way under all this, then bandaged over the top of the bag and started and finished below the fetlock so he could only pull off the bandage and not the bag ect.

then i plugged the hole with stockholm tar and cotton wool, and he was fine!
