What a pity that this wonderful horse has had to be retired due to a severe over reach. Can anyone explain why race horses seldom wear over reach boots even when being trained? While boots might not have prevented this severe injury they just might have.The horse didn't have the opportunity to run in The Arc and prove he was a great Derby winner but I hope he has a successful stud career...shame tho.

I have to agree with you,the overreaches would maybe have prevented it being quite so serious,however not sure if when galloping if they stand on a rubber boot could cause a serious tripping incident?not sure why they dont wear boots all round though? x worked on a racing yard yrs ago and they always wore boots to work but not on course?Odd ? x
 
He struck into his fetlock so only boots that wrapped around that would have made the damage less severe. The reason most horses don't wear boots for gallop work is that the tendons need to be able to flex and contract and they can't do that as well with boots on thus increaing your chances of then putting a hole in their tendons. It is also not that common for horses to over reach - the horse had never done it before in 2 years of training so why expect hi to do it now?

He is a stunning horse and will be an asset to Coolmore.
