So I was picking out my mares hooves today and her soles are quite thick as all horses soles do in summer, and I chipped one of the pieces off with the hoof pick unintentionally and underneath there was a pinkish tinge and it was quite powdery, has this happened to anyone else before? It didn't smell pungent or anything but I flushed it with dilute disinfectant, should I call the farrier or anything? My mare has had a white line infection before and when the farrier cleaned it out powdery stuff came out, Is this a similar thing? There are no holes or cracks in the affected hoof so I'm thinking this may just be a minor problem ie it's gone no further in than the sole.

Any insight on this would be great, thankyou

Im not too sure what you are describing... I would possibly be concerned if a lump has come out (indicating old/new abcess perhaps) but if it is a flake coming off I wouldnt be - are her soles all cracked if you scrub them/? Both mine are shedding their soles ATM and they are powdery when they ched them

If your are worried give your farrier a call. Most horses exfoliate their soles naturally but we often do not see it. This time of year though with changeable weather and good grass growth we will notice it. Is your horse due to be shod soon? I had a friend who noticed her horses sole coming away while she was picking her horses feet. The farrier told her it was 'unexfoliated foot disease' and would cost £55 to treat, he was just winding her up and meant her horse was due for his pedicure and a good trim...

I'm not that worried as I know that it happens around this time of year but it was just the pinkish tinge that worried me, maybe this is bruising growing out? I chipped a bit of sole away on another hoof and it was white/greyish underneath which I expected. Her soles aren't cracked as such, just where the sole has hardened and coming away which is normal. She's due for a pedi in another few weeks so hopefully she will be fine, thankyou :D
