Power and performance..../ any other mix??

It is effectively the "double dose" version of Calm and Condition, so it will be liable to put weight on, and it can make some horses a little bit more lively... ;)

Oh bugger. Im finding it very hard to find a feed to give energy without too many calories.... I know i wont find an energy feed with no calories, but whats got the least in?? Any ideas? Oats maybe?? Never fed Oats so wouldnt have a clue how many, or if they would work...

Am in the process of switching my mare overy onto it now from Calm and Condition. Am hoping it might help her gain weight whilst giving her some more oomph. It's 12.8MJ DE/Kg and 15% protein so should be good for building muscle.

Theoretically it shouldn't make a horse spooky as it's molasses, barley and alfalfa free but it does contain split peas so might wind some up. I guess even the calmest of horses might become a bit sharper on it simply if the feel good

TBH, if you've got a good doer with low enery levels, the best thing to do is feed it a high fibre diet, get it very fit and teach it to stay infront of the leg! My coloured was a bit like this, and he went best on just simple fibre/oil diet and lots of fast work and being disciplined with transitions etc.

I know someone who events at novice level and during the season just adds half a scoop of oats to the normal 1 scoop of cool cubes twice daily.

Allen and Page do something called Competition Mix Lite - can't remember much about it but might well be suitable

Had my grey on Power and Performance for a month or so and he became virtually impossible to deal with. Performed brilliantly, but so dangerous to be around. I had to be rescued several times whilst trying to hack him (never happened to me in the two years I'd had him) as he got so hyper he was set to explode at any point.

Having had that experience, I'd never try it again :-( He's now back to his normal self (and on different feed), thank goodness and looking forward to the BE season.

i used to feed Pilfer D&H Staypower Museli when he was eventing at BE Novice.

he is a very good doer but needed a bit more stamina for the longer, bigger courses and the Staypower did the trick without sending him sky high or making him put on weight.

I feed P&P to my boy in the middle ish of the season. He had much more 'sparkle' but without the fizz and didn't put on any weight. I guess you just have to remember that, like with humans, if you're feeding more calories, you need to equal the output otherwise you get a belly! :)

I've had great success with P&P for my young ISH. He has a tendancy to be quite lethargic and was quite tricky to keep weight on.
He has come out of this winter looking really fit/well/strong - I have used a combination of P&P, D&H performance fibre and propell plus.

I feed PP and find it great, but now slightly worried as I didnt realise it can put on weight.
I was using it on my neddie who is prone to putting on weight all last summer and he looked great.

Maybe I'll switch to Competition Lite and try propell plus...

Oh no!!

Now very confused, just spent a few lunch times reading up on the various comp mixes and chose P&P, as i need stamina and more umph, without weight gain, and it was the improved focus that looked attractive. bought 2 bags yesterday and now wonder if i've chosen correctly, especially re your comments about spookiness

Oh well, will report back soon!! ;)

Digger, I have been using it over the winter. My usually quite fat heffer is in fact slim, I would say hes bordering skinny/normal than normal/fat.

I used it all last summer and he was great, it gave him more umph without putting on the extra calories.
I evented him for years stuffing him full of oats and it just put more weight on :(

I have just emailed Simon from Allen and Page regarding this. As I am worried that I might be feeding the wrong feed.

I use A&P and it havnt put any weight on him thank god as he is a good doer. He's been on it all last summer looks good now. He now have the omph he needs!

If you dont want the fizziness that the mixes often produce have you tried the cubes? Just switched mine to Allen & Page cubes using the stay quiet cubes as the main base & you can then add the power & performance as and when you need - no need to introduce slowly or continually feed as the p&p cubes have the same basic properties as the stay quiet. No molasses, barley or oats in them so you basically get that bit more sparkle & stamina without blowing their brains.

Obv wont work for everyone but does the job for me as any mix sends him a bit la la

Having been told it was like rocket fuel I eagerly introduce it to Blitz in the hope of transforming him into a raging beast.

It did nothing! He was unchanged! Not spooky and not fatter

Thanks BB's, just what I needed to hear!! be interesting to hear what A&P say, although of course appreciate each horse and work load is different.

PS (edit) thanks to OP for this one

If you are getting the required results, you are feeding the right feed surely?!!

Ditto KatB! Any feed, including conditioning feeds are only fattening if calories in are greater than calories out. If it's working then why change it?

I agree, it has been working, and I dont want to change it, but as stated above I shall be looking for a new feed if its likely to be increasing his waistline.
ATM its cool, and there is no grass, so he is quite slim and I can get away with not feeding him huge amounts.

Come summer when its warm and hes less forward going I will want to increase his intake, but not if its going to increase his waist line.

Mmmmm now i dont know what to try...

Staypower does state that its "designed to be fed at lower intakes making it suitable for the performance horse which maintains weight and condition easily" so maybe thats what i should go on to first. Thanks for all your replies, helped lots x

My boy is no Propel Plus and i find that great. I had my last horse on it to as there both quite lazy types and it has done really well for them. Neither have put on weight becasue of it, so i woudl def give it a try :)
