Hi All

Has anyone had a horse experience an allergic reaction to power phaser fly spray? One of mine is covered head to toe in massive swellings this morning. I used power phaser on him for the first time yesterday, so could be that, although the bottle says it's gentle on skin. Could also be fresh bedding last night or rolling in nettles/horse fly assault. Or he realised he was being brought back into work and fancied some more time off...

Thanks

Yes, we have one mare that reacts to most of the fly sprays (including this one) but only when she has sweated (either being ridden or in the paddock on a hot day). She only comes up in small lumps though. It is a */?# nuisance as the others are fine and we haven't found anything that will definitely keep the midges off while being ridden. If you find something, please post.
I know of one horse that rolled in nettles and had an issue with reaction and anecdotally have heard of others. Is the fresh bedding of a different type than normal?
Good luck with tracking down a cause.

Does your mare react quickly or does it take many hours for the reaction to show?
My horse is a bit of a nightmare for things like this, but has never reacted to a spray before. Have you tried a lavender wash or similar for yours? Might be gentle enough.
The bedding was from the same place as usual, but had a chemically smell to it that I was suspicious of, so I wonder if it's been contaminated with something.

He's also cut his leg which looks like it may be brewing cellulitis, so this is probably going to be a vet job in the morning -_-

It was after a ride if she sweated, so say an hour after being sprayed, or when coming in from the field (supposedly could have occurred anytime). I don't find the washes much good for midges (or anything else so far) but thanks for the suggestion. If it's any help, the lumps disappear by the following morning (for her that is).
I would ring bedding company and ask about the smell?

Not on a horse but some of the mist blew back in my face once and my lips swelled up and were sore and itchy!!

I am stupidly sensitive though.

I put the power phaser gel on a gelding's sheath - and his skin peeled. Wasn't sore at all - it was only the top layer - but I use a different product down there now

Yes mine did. I had used about half a bottle without issue when suddenly she came out in massive lumps and was being driven crazy with itchiness

It is horrible stuff. People in my yard use it and I immediately get wheezy and have to get out of the way. I wouldn't be surprised if horses have allergic reactions to it!

Mine is allergic to a lot of things. Comes out in hives. He is allergic to the coopers one. If it has deet in it maybe its that yours is allergic to

Some of the swellings have started to ooze fluid... yuck. Hopefully the antibiotics for his leg will clear it all up! Looks like the power phaser is for the bin, just in case. Was expensive too lol... back to NAF I guess! Unless anyone has any recommendations for good fly sprays for sensitive souls
