Power Phaser problems....

It is pretty pungent. If it's making you feel ill then stop using it! I bought the gel last year in the vain hope it would repel horseflies (it didn't) and I ended up not only sponging it on the horse but all over myself as well as I get bitten terribly. Imagine how bad I stunk!
 
Its very strong, it reminds me of nicotine. I actually quite like it although I'm not sure I would want to wear it myself :)
 
Does anyone know the active ingredient in it? My fly spray was being rubbish at the weekend and my mare got sprayed with this stuff and it was far more effective.
 
It contains N,N-Diethyl-m-toluamide 5, 51g /100g (otherwise known as DEET) and Ethyl Butylacetylaminopropionate 4, 9g/100g.

DEET was developed in DEET was created in 1944 for use by the United States Army following its experience of jungle warfare during World War II. It was originally tested as a pesticide on farm fields, and entered military use in 1946 and civilian use in 1957. It was used in Vietnam and Southeast Asia. Mosquitoes hate the smell of it apparently. DEET can act as an irritant to the skin and should not be sprayed under clothing or on damaged skin - this is for human use, so not sure about equine. Other symptoms that can occur are breathing difficulty, burning eyes, and headaches.

My mare had an allergic reaction to it.

I tried using it on myself but the smell is awful and difficult to get off even with a shower so I have given it away.
 
I've given mine away. I use Jungle Formula on me when I'm abroad and I don't mind the smell of that but always use the spray outside as it makes me wheezy. Me and deet obviously don't get on.
 
I put it on pony and myself today when we went out. Pony still had lots of horseflies landing on him and I squashed a fair few but I had no bites on my arms and hands and saw none land on me which was good as I had been bitten on the previous few rides out. I react to the bites but fortunately pony doesn't and isn't too bothered about them unless they are on his face.
 
I like the smell - it's currently mingled with Biteback relief cream on my hands, which is also fairly pleasant.

I can't get near my horse with the spray, but the gel is fine apparently and is so far keeping his sheath area nicely unbitten.
 
It is the most effective spray I have used, mr B is totally manic if a horse fly lands on him to the extent I bought a ride on fly rug but the b....ers get under it and then it's a real issue. I don't like the smell but I've stuck some citronella oil into the bottle and it's a bit more bearable and perhaps even more effective?

Aha! Wonder if this is why I smelt like I’d been chain smoking today!
I do think it works, significantly better then the hundreds of other sprays I’ve tried tbou’
 
Its a foul and hideous smell, but it does work really well. I have a retired polo pony who refuses to wear a rug, so she has to sprayed, and she is by far the most comfortable when I use this spray, with Tri Tec a close second.
 
Another here who has found it effective - the first time I used the gel I only patch tested it in certain areas and it was noticeable that the flies were swooping around those areas closely but landing only where I had not used it. I was wary at first ( the first time I applied the gel with the sponge it removed the shine from what little nail varnish I had left from a meal out) but I now wear rubber gloves when applying and don’t put it on really delicate skin - obvs the flies then land there but I am reasoning that at least he is protected in the main.
 
I think only the fly sprays with DEET in them work for midges and mozzies and not just Power Phaser has it. I’ve just started using Deosect as mine is staying out a lot more and overnight which has definitely reduced bites but really only a fly rug with belly cover has worked. I also put Vaseline on sheath and midline to try to prevent bites.

I don’t think anything works for Horse flies though :(
 
I like tritec best but too much money so using power phaser again. Never had an issue with it other than when I'm spraying it and it blows back in my face and chokes me 😂
 
This stuff is by far the best spray I have ever used against horseflies. It really does do the job. We use it when we hack out as its the only thing I have ever found that worked against horseflies. Rest of the time its fly rugs and lots of homemade spray!
