My mare (21) is now having weekly Cabergoline injections-her mood has become more depressed than when on Pergolide, and she refuses hard feed. (Unless it’s someone else’s and contains molasses😳) Just started to give her Advanced Protection Formula but wondered if a) anyone can report positive mood improvement etc and b) is there a cheaper variant that works! Probably not, but worth asking. Thank you.

Sorry to hear your mare is having a tough time with the switch. Some owners do report a noticeable, positive shift in mood and overall "brightness" with APF, but it's not an instant fix and can take a few weeks to see an effect. It supports the nervous system, which can be helpful alongside the new medication.

For a cheaper alternative, look into pure magnesium oxide (often sold as "calmers"). It's a key ingredient in many mood formulas and can be very effective on its own. Feed-grade Epsom salts is another cheap option for magnesium. It's worth trying, especially as it might help with the feed refusal stress too. Always introduce any new supplement slowly.

Thank you @Alexanderevan145 😎

I used it years ago to try and counteract the veil during dose changes and also when in a laminitic episode and found it had positive effects on overall mood, appetite and footsoreness. Way too expensive to feed for anything other than short periods though.

I wouldn't use Epsom salts unless you want gut issues. Did you use AI to write this????
