My hubby has finally agreed to buy me a new mobile (as mine is ancient, brick-like & has no network coverage at the stables!)
These are my few must-haves;
Robust - mine has been dropped most days since I have had it...
Decent camera & video
Fit in jodhpur pocket
Internet/WiFi
With Vodafone - only network that works near me!

Any advice greatly appreciated!!

You need a sim free Land Rover phone, the phone I dream of, supposedly indestructible... But instead I've got a cheap Nokia flip phone that at least I can try and keep the screen from scratching to an unreadable mess too quickly!

Don't get a flip phone or a slide phone, they break far too easily, get a normal one (think they are called candybar).
I have had sony erisssons recently, and they have withstood being dropped on concrete floors, repeatedly, attacks of slobber, repeatedly and once even survived being cantered on by a 15.2 cob!

Good luck with the search wil be interested in the answers, Dark_Knight,my OH who is a riding instructor so around horses all the time, have just been discusssing this, both of us are using ancient Nokia "builders" phones atm cos his N95 has fallen to pieces and my Sony Ericsson, all singing, all dancing one has gone for repair today. Lady at T mobile shop couldnt recommend a phone that would last either of us.

Have seen a phone made by Landrover, which has a 3 yr cover everything warranty, but is about £300, so dont think we will be investing in that!

Mine is a Motorola V3 and its briliant. I take photos on it which I can then download onto the computer and print off, and I take videos. On ocassion I have been able to email a video of my horse taken on my mobile to show the vet what I am talking about over the phone. My motorola snaps shut, keeps clean, is user friendly and looks smart (or it used to)!

More important that what type of phone to purchase is what network to use. O2 is an excellent network, and there are many, many people at my yard who are on vodafone or orange and cannot get a signal and have to stand outside. I can be in my stable and have a decent conversation on my phone. 02 at one time used to have the best coverage, and I believe they still do.

The Landrover phone is totally brilliant. My OH has one. (I have a scarily vulnerable G1!) He's run over it - in the Landrover (on purpose!) The horse has stood on it. He's dropped it in the water Bowser. My daughter even treats it as a dive toy in the swimming pool. It is a bit chunky but not impossibly so.

You can get it free on an Orange contract. But you can also buy sim free ones for use on any network. Definitely the most practical horsey phone IMO.

Another vote for sony eriksons. Mine has put up with 2 years of hideous abuse, including twice spending several hours at the bottom of a water trough. I've even managed to drop it down the loo and into a full cup of coffee (don't ask...). After the coffee incident I turned it on and sparks flew everywhere, but, it still works perfectly, including the camera!

LMAO.... I've done the coffee thing too! I HAVE to have insurance on all of my phones as after 3 months of my physical abuse, they give up the ghost and go to mobile heaven. The best phone I had was a Samsung D600, went through hell and back with me, even had a go in the washing machine and come out working perfect. Since had Samsungs and Nokia's and they just can't cope with me.

So far *touch wood* my Sony Ericsson is lasting well - think it's on the 4th month with me - record breaking!!! So I'm impressed with it! It gets dropped several times a day and my dog steals it and puts it in his bed! *Rolls eyes* Still works! xx

Ive just got myself the Nokia 6303 which is a lot like the 'original Nokia Bricks' it has a metal rather than plasic case meaning that hopefully won't break as easily when I drop it. Certainly feels more robust than my last one!! has all the gadgets and with Voda I get unlimited texts, internet and 600 mins for £25... not bad..fone came free!

also a sony ericsson fan... mine has been dropped numerous times and cantered over... found in the indoor school... field and on car parks on a regular basis.. so my phone magically has a way of finding me again! : P

it is now sporting a crack across the screen... which is where i dropped it on the slabs outside my house, but if you can see past the crack it all works fine!

survived water and dirt...

i need a new one aswell so will watch with interest! x

Surely that depends on where you live??? every network has blackspots but around us Vodafone has the best coverage and as they claim to have something like 97% of UK coverage, they're pretty failsafe!!

Same with sony ericson! My old one was sony ericson, it wisthanded being dropped down the loo, on the floor, in the waterbucket, by the horse... horse even pulled the front pannel off and it kept working for ages (had it about 5 years)!Got their new one the sony ericson satia or something like that. 12.1 megapixel camera, is a touch screen but apart from that its great! Already has withstood a snowball fight (was taking pictures when one landed on it :S), being dropped on the floor and chewed by my boy (chews everything!)... and ive only had it 3 days :O

!!

I have a Sony Ericsson C902 it's fab, I did insure mine when I got it as it's a contract phone, dropped it many a time onto concrete and no problems at all!!

It did however die when I dropped it face down into liquid mud...kept working but mud got in the battery charger bit and I couldn't charge it, so got a brand spanking new one on insurance

My ericsson in general; have been good... but my latest one has died a death

the screen has gone funny on it, and the speaker keeps on breaking

Am gutted!!

Can't believe someone else did the coffee thing! I just sat there and stared at it in disbelief thinking 'given the size of the planet/country/room/table, how on earth do I drop my phone so it lands perfectly into a 3 inch diameter cup???' Muppet.

And to prove that, O2 here is rubbish, Vodafone Reasonable and Orange very goog. OP did say she can only get Vodafone

I have the new Samsung 'unbreakable' phone. Its the b2100. On the ad on TV they drop into water and drive over it with a 4 x 4.

OH tried it with the water thing and yes it worked. I've dropped it a few times too and its still fine. Had it about 3 months now and it hasn't got a mark on it. Definately recommend it.

I hadn't been going out with OH very long, at that time I was on pay as you go. He bought me the 'then' newest samsung flip phone for £200. The first day of having it, it died! Within one hour (if that) I had it on the chair arm and went to grab the remote and PLOP! Knocked new phone off into full cup of boiling hot coffee I had on the floor... impressive huh!!!!

Thinking of the ways I have killed my phones:- Horse stood on two phones, washing machine more times then I care to remember, toilet, bath, puddle, down the drain, over dropping it, smacked OH with my handbag and smashed my phone inside, probably many more I haven't thought of, but my all time favourite - got knocked off my horse by a wave in the sea! I had put my phone and my friends phone in my bra to keep them dry lol!

The phone shop people laugh at me! Every time I walk in, whether to have a nose at what's new out or whatever, they always ask 'what have you done now' lmaooo

I have a Nokia 3720.. which is their new ish "rugged phone" it has all the usual features, and is dust and splash proof... I've not had it long but has so far stood up to my fairly casual treatment of it! Sensible size, candy bar, metal case and rubbery buttons. Does email and internet on a Simbian 4 OS ( I think that the term!), has maps etc included so if you have gps works as a sat nav
I haven't looked to see if available specifically on vodaphone, but I bought mine on ebay, unlocked / sim free and then got a v good deal from Orange because they didn't have to give me a phone...so you could try that.
