I'm 6 months into my pregnancy and yesterday entered the world of buggys/prams/travel systems out shopping. Wow, there is way too much choice, and I have come away still feeling bamboozled by the whole thing. Picking a horse trailer was so much easier than this!

Just wondered if any horsey mums can give any suggestions on what worked for them.

I realise that early on I can put baby in a carrier or sling, or park a pram up and do yard duties without too much hassle but I'm thinking that in the not too distant future I would like to get back competing and perhaps hunt a little next autumn so would need something OH could wheel the little one around the countryside comfortably, while I have a few hours of fun!

I prefer the sturdier look of a four wheeler pushchair/pram, but the three wheelers seem to be the ones they market as off roaders.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

I had a 3 wheeler much easier over uneven ground, just make sure you can lock the front wheel for really hard going.

I had 2 one was a land rover one it was basic but the best one for horsey jobs and a standard mother care one which was also good but much heavier but better for a smaller baby as the travel system locks on.

Not sure they make the land rover one any more but I imagine you could find one on ebay

I had an urban detour 3 wheeler, as did my YO.
Absolutely brilliant. Went everywhere. went through mud, deep gravel, on paths, on pavements. I have passed it on now & it has been round Burghley XC three times now and is still on the same set of tyres.
Would def have another one ~ not that it will be happening!!

Urban detour, thanks I had forgotten the name :) good all rounder, and we still have it and it is going strong except for the parcel bit at the bottom which the cats scratched to death.

Urban detour - absolutely brilliant, still going strong after 6 years constant use - been in more fields and to more game fairs than I could shake a stick at. I've bought a Phil and Ted and a lightweight one too but always go back to the old faithful Urban Detour. Just get it in brown or khaki and you're laughing!

Quinny buzz! Quinny buzz!!! I love my Quinny buzz.

You just need to get the extra off-road wheel for the front, tbh tho I have the normal wheel still on the front and have no problems!! :) :)

I had a Jane (pronounced hannay) rebel pro and that has been through heavy mud over 2 winters including burghley xc. It is very light and when they are tiny you can clip in the car seat so when they fall asleep in the car u can move them over without disturbing them x

Iv got a 4 wheeler and it copes fine! It's a silvercross surf. Check it out on their website! Copes with my fields, beach and very lightweight! Can lift it straight into my truck easily! I didn't fancy a 3 wheeler but was concerned the 4 wheelers wouldn't cope but the surf does well.

Look at first when I read the title I thought, this post should be in soapbox:mad: Then realised when I read yes it probably does belong in here.

Now then I would suggest the 3 wheeler with the large wheels (don't know what they are called but seem to do well on the beach too.:)

Something you really need to understand!!!! When little one arrives!! YOU need your own time for you OH can then be daddy:p while you get back to competing:D:D

Remember these words when you can't ride because OH can't cope on his own:D

Our Jane 360 has been great.(Think it has been superceded by a more modern model). Tough and will go anywhere.
Lasts until the child is 4yo. Some of the other ones I have seen are quite small and the child will grow out of them quickly. I was planning ahead for a whingy tired four year old miles from home and too tight to buy a second one later on!. First one was secondhand off ebay too.
Downsides are that it is heavy and you need a big boot but the modern model may be better in that respect.

2 things to check
1) you can fold and unfold it easily (one hand?)
2) it fits in your car boot along with anything else you may want to carry (bale of hay, sack of feed, saddle etc..)

For slings I recommend try Phil at www.littlepossums.co.uk for specific recommendations - she carries a huge range and what she doesn't know about slings isn't worth knowing. Your OH may actually prefer a sling as its easier to walk around eg a XC course with a sling than push a pram through muddy/rough terrain, it's a more sociable height for your baby for you and your husband to included baby in the conversation - especially if you're on top of the horse ( it also means baby is further away from the many dogs on the course) and also leaves 2 hands free (to carry your bits and pieces, shopping etc?! and stuff for baby). Phil can advise on a suitable choice either for him specifically or for you both.

Thank you for all the replies.

So it seems a 3 wheeler is the way forward. I wasn't so keen on them when I looked at them for the first time but I shall take a closer look during the next pram shopping outing.

Urban detours aren't made anymore so I will keep my eyes out for any on ebay or look at one of mothercare's models that superceeded the UD.

Thankfully I have a few months left to get organised and try and find the perfect mode of transport for little one!

If anyone else has any other suggestions they would be gratefully recieved

From someone who has spent probably 4 figures on prams and push chairs.

PHIL & TED They are 3 wheelers and all the seat fabics are easy to wash. Especially if you're planing to have another at some point as they have a extra seat which goes on top or behind. The behind seat is great with one baby at shows as it creates a big space to carry grooming kit, extra jacket, rugs as well as all the baby stuff. Also excellent when shopping just put your stuff in the seat instead of struggling with basket and pushchair.

The also fold up pretty easily and will fit in a small hatch- managed to get mine into the boot of a Yaris courtesy car once! I bought mine for Kiddicare as they had a good deal on the package I needed.

I 1st bought a Graco Quatrro travel System for clean and Quinney 3XL for dirty. Graco was fine I did like the seat base that stayed in the car, but I think you can get these for most make now and are well worth the extra. Then got preggers with my second 3 months after having my 1st so then started looking at doubles and I wish I'd bought the Phil and Ted to start with.

And after maybe 2.5 years of daily use I still sold it on ebay for about £150! Now I just have a Maclaren umbrella fold one which bought off ebay for £13 incl P&P when it was still available in my local Mothercare World for £120!!! :D
