Has anyone had behaviour changes in a horse on Prascend? My 17 yr old mare has been on half a pill for 8 weeks and has become rather lively! Not the depressed state I was warned about, but quite full of herself. Her mother was the same, and became quite difficult to handle in hand, under saddle or(!!) in harness! (in her late twenties) even. Better this than depressed, but I am beginning to feel a bit aprehensive when we go out! She lives out 24/7 has miniscule non heating feed as EMS. Looks well, but field now looks ploughed....

I have heard of this a few times. The reasoning / explanation is usually that what you are now getting is in fact your horse's NORMAL behaviour now that she is no longer struggling under cushings. So she is back to her younger self again! The previous quieter behaviour was the abnormal behaviour, though you may have got used to it and thought it her normal way of being. Does make sense if you say her mother was also like this. I have never heard a proper veterinary explanation, only owners reporting this and coming to this explanation.
Sorry, can't help you with trashed field and a ridden lunatic, but it's still very early days with her metabolism settling down.

My boy has had a couple of months on prascend now and anecdotally I think he’s definitely livelier. I’m so relieved though, it was the lack of energy and general quietness that made me get him tested in the first place as no other symptoms! Hopefully your mare will settle down with time, or maybe if you’re worried speak to your vet and see if her dose needs adjusting?

One of mine definitely perked up back to his normal, livelier self once on prascend. He wasn’t any livelier than normal though if that makes sense. I didn’t really notice any difference with my elderly pony when he started on it, however his levels were much lower so maybe he didn’t feel so bad in the first place.
Maybe speak to your vet about trialling dosage as maybe she doesn’t need what she’s getting quite yet.

Mine reverted back to her young self. I wouldn’t say she was any worse (but she’s a Welsh Chestnut mare, so fairly lively anyway!). This hasn’t faded either and she’s 27 now. I thought, before she was diagnosed, that she was just getting old, but I think it was because she didn’t feel great. Prascend has been a godsend for her.
