So, my son's lovely cob mare has just had a positive TRH stim test. It's no real surprise to be honest, she was borderline a few months ago, and she's really gone downhill these past few weeks - she's lost a lot of condition, she's really lethargic, she's had another hoof abscess... One PC instructor even suggested we fed her some oats for energy - now I'm no expert, but for a hardy native type to need extra feed in summer, there must be something wrong! My son says it's like riding with the handbrake on. Not good! I'm actually relieved that we have a diagnosis and can hopefully make her feel a bit better now...

Anyway, the vet has written a prescription and arranged for tablets to be left out for collection this afternoon. Great. Now to my question - where do you all buy your Prascend/Pergolide from in the long-term? I've looked at the usual online vet sites (VioVet, 365vet, Hyperdrug etc) and they all work out at about £1/tablet. Does anyone have any other suggestions? I presume you need to pay the vet for new prescriptions regularly too? Is it cheaper to just get the meds through the vet then? I'm new to this Cushings lark (but I've had laminitics before, so I'm ok with that bit) so any wise words of wisdom would be appreciated.

Thanks x

I get a 6 monthly prescription from the vet @ £24.99 and set up a monthly delivery of Prascend from Viovet. They send it out without fail, I never have to chase them up. It works out a lot cheaper than buying from the vet.

You will probably need to trial the correct dosage for your pony, so it is probably too early to set up a 6 monthly prescription yet. Your vets will probably suggest another ACTH assay in about 6 weeks to check levels.

That's great, thanks TP! And yes, the vet has suggested another test in 2 months.

i used to get mine from animed or viovet and my vet prescription cost me £12.50 for 6 months supply. if you can get them for just over £1 you are doing well as i was paying that in 2016 but the vets charge much more..you will also need to be careful what you feed as laminitis is likely if the levels are too high. luckily i managed to avoid that by having mine tested twice every year and upping the dose when required, so she could have an almost normal life out in the field...

My mare's abscess, which had been intermittent for 3 months, cleared up when she started on Prascend. I got a deal from my vet and a better deal when we had 2 of them on it. The difference wan't worth bothering with online pharmacies.

I get a six months supply prescription, and buy the tablets in one go. I just look for the cheapest supplier, the only one I have any problem with is Beeston Animal Health who sent it to the wrong person, wrong address and then expected me to collect it.

I have a friend whose horse refuses to eat prascend tablets. Vet then tried percolate tablets which still wouldn’t eat no matter what we tried! Horse is not happily on pergolide paste which they have no issues administering. Also much cheaper than the tablets! Under the cascade they can change the drug form from the licensed prascend to a different pergolide if it is going to cause a welfare issue! Just something I thought I’d share as I’d never heard of this before
