Hi

My horse has just been Diagnosed with prascend and is currently on 1/2 tablet a day.

Interested to know how others have got on with it, how your horse improved, how long it took to get improvements etc etc..

TIA

There are many threads on the subject. If you search via the magnifying glass at the top you’ll find them.

It’s literally been a lifesaver for mine and enabled her to be pretty normal for the last 10 years.
How long until you started seeing improvements?
What was her symptoms before the tablets and what improved ?
Thank you

Game changer for mine - he's on 1 tablet a day, his fat pads and crest disappeared, he became happier and more alert, no longer drinking an entire bucket of water a night.

It took him about 2 weeks to settle with it but he went a bit lethargic for a few days, low appetite etc - some suggested it was the veil but the vet felt it was too soon/too low a dose, and he did come out of it after about a week, so vet thought maybe something viral/coincidental.

After a couple of weeks. I thought she was just getting old, but that proved to be incorrect. She reverted back to her young self. Her only symptom was laminitis in her hinds only. She’d been laminitis free until this year when she came down with it. Thankfully ok now and that was totally my fault for taking my eye off the ball and underestimating the grass growth in December.

Glad she got through the laminitis and I've been in the same boat before in December!

Did your mare have any stiffness foot soreness that also got better when starting the treatment ?

Mine was lethargic and sweaty and a bit fatty in random places, after about a month that went away.
She is on one tablet a day, diagnosed last autumn
ETA- also had about 6 abscesses in different feet over the space of 4 months , have only had one since

Fat pads disappeared and she felt younger overnight. Back into work and on prascend for 12 years with no further issues. Lost her to unrelated colic.

Mine was very flat, wasnt eating or pooing much and just had no energy on the ground and head was always hanging low.

On rides he was un usually spooky and felt like a ticking bomb. He was first on 1, then 1 1/2 and is now on two tablets a day.

Ours is very likely to have it but unusually he has lost a huge amount of weight so for once we're not dealing with him being overweight! Starting on half a pill a day (would be less if we could find a way to split the pills smaller, he's only a shetland) and hopefully he'll pick up soon!

Mine went onto it about 6 years ago.
It took him back to the way he'd been before.

However, last year he started getting chronic diarrhoea, and then through the winter lost loads of weight, and colicked about 4 times. After the last episode I stopped the prascend, and he put on weight, and has normal droppings again.

After discussion with vet, I've chosen to leave him off it.

Buy a pill splitter - works to cut 1/2 a tablet in half (so a 1/4 tablet). I haven’t tried cutting the 1/4 tablet any smaller though.

How do people actually give the Prascend? Ellie is on 1/2 a tablet but she has got quite wiley at avoiding taking it! At the moment I hollow out a piece of carrot and push it in that and that works most of the time, but not always so would be interested how others do it!

I tried absolutely everything. I just put them in a syringe and dissolve in 10ml of water. My mare just accepts and I don’t need a headcollar or anything. The bonus of that is she’s also great to worm now!

I had good success with the empty capsules, but eventually she got wise to that and could sift them out. She wouldn’t have anything fed by hand for a long time though. They just taste really awful.

Mine eats them by hand 😱 strangely, as she is a very fussy eater.
I pop the prascend and a treat in her mouth and she eats them both at the same time

I use the hollowed out bit of carrot method. Mine has his breakfast, then walks over to have his meds. His field mate gets a bit of carrot too. If the pill falls out his mouth, he will usually take it from my hand or I pop it in the side of mouth.

Mine has been medicated for 2 1/2 years. His main symptoms were being very lethargic and losing muscle. Those improved in the first couple of months. His shedding and coat has taken 2 summers to improve which is quite typical.

He still gets fat pads easily - although he tested negative for EMS both me and my vet think he probably would have it if I didn't manage him carefully.

My mini Shetland took his pracend half pill in a hollowed out carrot for years and then didn’t! These days I just pop it in his mouth by hand and give him a treat afterwards 😊 I’ve not got bitten yet 🤣

I give my horse Pergoquin (same as Prascend but cheaper) and the tablets are easy to break in half and a quarter if needed.

Mine was on them for 5 years . He had started peeing during rides which he never had before and sweating abnormally. This went back to normal within a couple of weeks. He had the tablets folded in a scrap of bread which he always liked.

I also give half a tablet in a thumbnail size bit of carrot. Occasionally he turns his nose up and I use a small piece of apple instead. Annoyingly half fits perfectly in the hole of a (sugar free!) polo but he won’t touch that!

I dissolve mine in the tiniest smidge of apple juice... Only thing that works with my mare, she got wise to everything else. Then I pop it in her feed and she scoffs it without any fuss!

Symptoms improved within days of her being put on prascend - I was surprised to see it work so quickly tbh.
