Very pleased, he made day 3

PMSL, well exactly! That belgium round was horrible to watch, but fair play to them, left all the poles in place, which is the object after all.

exactly what i thought! you're hardly a novice riding at this level, no one is going to be shouting "shorten those washing lines!"

Why say he should shorten his reins - I will bet Pawel Spisak knows the best way to ride his own horse

Maybe....but then again it is perfectly legitimate to say a coffin canter is needed XC at a certain fence, so why not say someone should shorten their reins....? (Playing devil's advocate obviously as I have a rather unorthodox warm up for SJ)

ETA - meaning that we are happy to criticize other aspects of riding, so why not that?

NOW you are playing devil's advocate

Fact is, quite poss if you rode that horse on a contact SJing he crashes through fences or fusses - who knows. But every horse competing at a 4 star should be capable of coming back into a pinging canter on the XC fence - the fault with Burghley was rider error, and lack of knowledge/thought on how to approach the fence - bleurgh, I just missed Vitoria because I was writing this LOL!

riding with longer reins means you have to keep your shoulders back more, and you give a bit more freedom in the air... maybe this horse likes that. Robert Smith rode with washing-line reins for a very long time, remember... i don't recall it stopping his horses from jumping spectaculary!
of all the horses there, i want Gamour (Tiziana wotsitname's) the most, he's stunning, and she rides him brilliantly.

Vittoria rode a v nice round! I know the Burghley example was a bit poor, what I really meant was that we criticize every other aspect of people's riding, so I don't think it's unreasonable to mention that, esp as a commentator who is trying to find things to say about people jumping round the same course and bearing in mind non-horsey people may be watching! Considering they felt it important to mention stud girths! They have to talk about things the lay-person will understand too, and reins isn't too technical if you know what I mean. I am sure they would agree he probably knows his horse best, but they have to talk about something....
