Anyone know what the dosing needs to be for Praziquantel only wormer? Got one from vet but no dosage instructions and can't find any online! Any help appreciated 👍

do you mind me asking how much a dose was and if it was easy to get from the vet. When I asked I didn't really get an answer from them

She's not billed me yet but she quoted around £55. It was a bit of a faff to get hold of. Westgate Labs have a good info sheet for vets. Will try and find it.

*whispers*

A single syringe of Equimax contains sufficient praziquantel to treat a 700kg horse, and costs about £13.00. It also contains ivermectin, though.

It’s nuts that Equitape was ever withdrawn seeing as praziquantel is still available in combination with other wormers.
"whispers" back. I'm afraid at that price mine will be getting equimax.

I agree it's nuts about equitape. Why tell us to worm count/equisal test and then not provide the product we need to treat the correct worms. £55 was around the price my vet quoted but I thought they were on another planet. :)

ETA don't suppose any of the horse vets on here can give any insight?

My vet had to order it from Bova as I needed to worm for tapeworm only. It came in a syringe especially made up for me with the correct amount for my horse. Can't remember the cost but it wasn't massive. It was Westgate who gave me the info which I passed onto my vet.

If you use something like Equimax when you don't need to treat for anything other than tape worm , you are just driving up resistance by using an unnecessary chemical.
We will end up in a situation where horses will die from worm burdens as there will be no more effective dewormers left due to resistance.
Routine worming withing egg counting/saliva test and using a combination wormer when it's not needed are practices that will increase resistance.

The recommendation is to use praziquantel only for tape worm over pyrantel I believe is due there already being resistance reported to pyrantel.

Your vet can order a praziquantel only wormer from BOVA. I haven't had the bill yet but on the phone my practice told me it was about £26.
