My friend has a broodmare that looks rather odd after having her foal. Her belly is huge and nearly down to her knees!!!! But she has no top line what so ever. If you were just looking at the top of her you would think she was very under weight but then you look at the size of her belly and it looks like she is too fat!!!!
She has been told by physio lady that it could be her pre pubic tendon and if it is gone completely there is not a lot that can be done for her.
Does anyone have any knowledge or experiance of problems in this area?? As anything would be extremely helpful.
Thanks.

Yes, I've experience of a couple of these and non of the mares survived. Best to get the vet out IMHO. So sorry!

Get the vet asap to assess.

As S_N says - not a good survival rate.....

Dependant on how far along the mare is, if she has ruptured her prepubic tendon, you can sling them til the foal is born....

Given that this mare has already foaled, your friend may end up having to put the mare down and hand raise the foal, or get a foster mare.

Very lucky the foal is out - they normally require assistance.

As said - VET! :) Thats about the only suggestion. The outlook isnt great if thats what has happened.

Well after doing some research on the web last night it really does look like Nelly has ruptured her pre pubic tendon. She has the rocking horse look and distended tail (raised). She seems happy in her self but lame behind, dont know if this is caused by the possible rupture???. Foal was born end of April and is a pretty good size already. Vet did look at her last week and didnt seem too worried even when my friend mentioned the possibility of a rupture in this area, vet didnt think horse should be put down. So friend is going to get a different vet to have a look and see what they think.
But I personally think its gonna be RIP Nelly :(.

Consider getting in a muscle expert - experienced Bowen Practitioner or Equine Touch type work. Has it just happened recently?

The lady that is coming is a muscle manipulation and equine sports massage lady, so she will be able to tell us more hopefully.
No she went like it about 4 days before giving birth and its just got much worse. She developed quite a large odeama (sp), about 4/5 days before having her colt, didnt have any trouble with the birth though!!!
She did have a lot of bloody discharge about 2 weeks before having him and went a bit colicy and depressed got vet out and he just gave her some antibiotics which helped a little.
My friend has prepared herself for the worst but she would rather the vet agree to having her put down as I think we all know thats how its gonna end anyway!!! She looks worse week by week!!!
