Pre purchase vetting

Sorry if this has been asked a million times on here; I've searched and can't find anything that fully answers my question.

I've been to view a horse and I'm keen to purchase. Want to view again and obviously arrange a vetting. Problem is I've got a holiday in France booked next week (from Tues) that I can't cancel so that throws a spanner in the works. Hadn't intended to view any before hols, but you know how it goes when you start looking!

So, firstly how do I go about arranging a vetting? Do I just ring up local vets and ask them? If anyone knows of a suitable vet in the Rochdale/Bury area could you PM me? How long does it normally take to get a vet to come look at horse (e.g. would they do it the next day, or in a week etc)? Is it realistic to try and get this done before going away on Tues, or should I wait till I'm back from hols a week later?

Would you do more than a 2 stage vetting for a fairly cheap (2K) 13 yr old happy hacker?

I told the seller I'm keen and said I'd like to arrange a vetting. Should I make a firm offer at this stage? I'm happy to pay asking price. I mentioned putting a deposit down and she nodded but kept her cards quite close to her chest about whether this would reserve him for me while I'm on holiday. Do you think there is a way of reserving him or do I just have to accept that she may sell him to someone else while I'm away?

Please help, my head is exploding!

If you really want the horse make a firm offer subject to vetting, arrange the vetting at a time to suit owner and vet, if you are away it is not the end of the world as long as you can be contacted by the vet. If the horse passes arrange for it to remain there until you get back from holiday and pick it up ASAP after you get back, most sellers would be happy with that, a deposit would be a good idea to sweeten the deal, make sure you get a receipt.

If you want to wait until you are back from holiday it may well be sold as I would not expect them to wait until then for vetting, so much can go wrong or you could just change you mind.
