Mini Me has been wearing glasses since she was a baby so obviously wears them when she rides... Now she is starting to do more, jump bigger, more xc fences etc it has been suggested that I look at some sort of sports eyewear just in case she falls etc & glass shatters:eek: Also she had a fall yesterday as she said she couldnt see properly in the rain coming up to a fence.

Does special type of eyewear exist?

I think most lenses these days are shatterproof, but you could ask the optician to be doubly sure and maybe find more flexible frames :) Drizzly rain is always a problem for my husband and his glasses tend to fog up, but I wouldn't recommend contacts, someone I know uses these and she's constantly getting dirt and grit in her eyes when she's at the yard. Could maybe try a much wider brim over the hat when riding, but that's all I can come up with for visibility in the rain! GL showpony.

Polycarbonate lenses are probably safest and she may already have these as they are often used for children these days, I think.
As for the rain, if you do find a solution please let me know, bain of my life! that and steam!

You can certainly get shatterproof lenses and flexible frames which makes wearing specs safer. I'm in my 50's but tell the dispensing optician that I'm basically a tomboy who never grew up! I get the flexon frames which are really bendy and safer in the event of a fall, but are quite expensive. They do last well though. I can't wear contacts so it's specs or nothing.
I'm afraid that riding in the rain at speed is always tricky though. I confess that when I was a teenager I jumped my horse over a cattle grid on Dartmoor on a wet day because I simply didn't see it when cantering down a track :(. Thank goodness the horse DID see it and cleared it.

Daily disposable contact lenses are extremely thin and comfortable and don't need the regular everyday wear that thicker ones do. Very good for sport, I wear mine all the time and don't have any problems around the yard, mucking out, hay nets, grooming, hoof trimming etc. Fresh pair each time you wear so no cleaning solutions :-)

I personally wear contacts, but also would never wear specs when riding.

This is personal preference as I cannot stand wearing my glasses at the yard as mentioned steam/ rain/ dirt. and I have a very cheeky pony who like to try and tkae them off at any given chance.

Have you considered contacts, or ask you optition for his opinion as there are some very good 'sport specs' around, however with regards the rain issue ....... let us know when you find the answer.
