Hi everyone,

My 6 yr old ISH has just been diagnosed prednisolone for allergies and head shaking. However im concerned with the dosage that was recommended by the vet as he has said 92 a day! Now im not a vet but to me that does seem a little extreme but as I have never had to use them in the past I have no idea and was hoping if someone else has and if they could let me know if that amount is either wrong or ok!!

Im due to collect the tablets tomorrow and believe that they are 5mg and there are 1000 to a pot and he weighs approximately 497.

Thanks guys

I've only seen them given to pregnant mares to aid pregnancy retention - 40 x 5mg pills daily.

seems a lot to me, my 17.3hh mare was precsribed 12-20 twice a day. i would speak to your vet when you pick up the tablets in the morning just to clarify he did say 92

That seems an awful lot to me too. My head shaker was on that (and it did help) but can't remember the dosage for the tablets I had. I have the box at the yard and will see if I can still read them, but I'm pretty sure it was more like 8 than 92!!

Not sure about the dose, but they are using 5mg tablets so will be a lot. Strangly enough you can get 25mg tabs which would mean less to give, but they are over twice the price! Vet maybe giving you 5mg one as it works out so much cheaper.

One of my geldings was on 100 tablets a day as initial dose and then reduced down to 50 a day then to 50 every other day for IBD. He is an IDxTB weighing just over 600kgs. The 5mg tablets are actually normally prescribed for small animals which is why dosage rate seems high for horses but weight for weight comparison between small animals and horses it seems about right to have 92 tablets.

A little tip - try and get the dose ready before you make feeds - my boy did not appreciate having to wait the extra bit of time it took me to count out the 100 tablets whilst waiting for his breakfast to appear!!

Has your vet discussed the laminitis risks with you? I think that steriods given orally are less dangerous than if given by injection but it's still a risk and you might need to make other changes to compensate for the effect of the steroids.

My vet had a VERY long chat about the risk of laminitis as Dex had it badly 4 years ago when i bought him.
Dex is currently a very sick cob with liver/heart/circulation issues. He weighs 490 kg on the weightape and is on 78 Prednisolone, 4 hepatyl, 50 furosemide, liver function tonic 30ml- that is a total of 132 tablets a day  BUT he is finally starting to look normal, the massive lymphangitis type swelling has nearly gone, his bloods are improving and that made the risk worthwhile.
FWIW my vet said the greatest danger was in the first 24 hours after receiving steroids and he feels the tablets are marginally safer than injections as they enter the bloodstream more gradually..

Humans are usually px'd 40mg (8 tablets) in acute cases.

I take eight 5mg tablets when my allergies kick off so I suspect your horse would certainly need a fair amount. Suggest you discuss a higher dosage tablet with your vet to reduce the number of pills.

Our 10kg dog was on 30mg a day, so I would assume the dose is fine relative to the horse's weight, but if you are worried the best thing is to confirm with the vet when you pick it up.
