Hi all,

I am a little bored at work and thought I would do spot of online shopping for rugs. I have NO rugs so need to start from scratch.

Which are your preferred rug brands for bigger horses?
Any recommended sites for good deals?
I was just going to buy a fleece, heavy stable rug, under rug and turnout rug to start. Do you think that will be enough for a horse that will be in for the winter?

Thanks for your help as always!

Derby house had a rug pack on a deal a while ago was a light weight medium weight and a fleece, dont know if it is still on right enough, i've got a big horse and weatherbeeta are good, as ar jhl i found masta's werent wide enough at the front for him, think thats all ive tried

I think you can't beat premier equine (google them). Plus they have a sales page which often has great bargains. If your horse is uncommonly large you may find they have loads of sale stuff in the right size. Also take a look on ebay there are often loads of good big horse rugs on there for really good pricdees. Thermatex are also amazing but pretty expensive in my opinion and a lot of people love weatherbeeter too.

I have a large warmblood and like premier equine, horseware or mark todd in general.
My horse is in in winter has a very fine coat and has nevr been clipped. The most rugs I have ever put on him in -8 degrees is a medium weight mark todd stable with a light weight premier equine over it...and to be honest it was only because the wind was blowing straight in his box.

If I was starting again I would probably just buy the Premier equine stable trio

the fleece
and the premier quine buster trio for turnout

They fit well and look fab and do the job IMO but I know other posters have had bad experiences with quality so good luck:)

Weatherbeeta are fab, good price and fit well. I've got an Amigo bug rug which fits the rotund warmblood well too. I proably would not buy another premier equine rug as it rubs her shoulders, but their boots are the best!!! Enjoy your shopping am jealous!!

Im another for premier equine

My boy was 18.1 and they were the only rug to come deep enough on him, all the rest looked like mini skirts lol

I bought a Buccas in a Derby House Rug Rummage many years ago. I only bought it because it was cheap and the right size. Hated the beige colour and rather looked down on it and rarely used it.

Until last winter.

All the freezing conditions and it was AMAZING! Indoor rug and outdoor rug, well fitting and after all these years it's as good as new.

I would always say never spend too much on a rug, but I would happily dish out for another one of these - not that need to just yet!

Another vote for Premier Equine, fitted my last horse perfectly when nothing else would, and the same rugs also fit my new clydie cross. Wouldnt buy anything else now :)

I like derby house rugs, premier equine are good, found masta have a strange fit and never suited by IDx or my mums ID. His nicest fitting rug is a rhinegold stable rug that was handed to me when it didnt fit a friends!! Iv found amigos are very narrow chested but rambo are wider. it depends on price you want derby house is my choice as they vary in price! Personally I would get a middle weight stable rather than heavy weight as you can layer with under rug if v cold but he wont over heat if its not freezing.

I prefer amigo on my 16.3hh Hanoverian.

This is interesting as a friend at the yard also has a 16.3hh hanoverian and swears by Amigo- yet they don't fit my 17hh danish wb x cob (who I strongly suspect is actually part ID- but that is another story) I've no idea why the rug range would fit one well muscled, large horse and not another, but they are certainly too short and too narrow for my chap

Personally I have found Weatherbeeta fit the best, as he has a Mark Todd fly rug that is a bit tight across the shoulder and a Saxon (which I think are Weatherbeeta's budget range??) which only comes half way down his sides  :o :D

On Pickle the rugs that fitted him best were

Thermatex (down a size they are huge)
Bucus
Premier Equine
Fal Pro (only have old ones though so can't comment on fit of newer versions)

I had Horsewear Rhino rugs for my ISH 17.2. The horse went back to the dealer so still have them worn for a couple of days that im selling on they are 7ft or 7ft3 and had lots of room in them.

i agree with DD... a mw stable is much more useful than an hw. I have a cheapy mw stable rug that is now 5 yo, but looks new still. He wears a fleece under it when necessary, and has even on one ocassion worn it under his t/out rug!

WOW!! I was not expecting all this amazing advice! I have my credit card on my desk, ready for ACTION!!
The Derby House and Premier Rugs look like the best price-wise but I love the look of the Weatherbeeta and Horsewears. Mmmmmmmmm decisions....

that was why i said it, mine over winter had lycra neck cover, fleece, mw stable rug (with neck) when very cold had extra mw stable rug on, and when turned out had fleece mw stable rug with neck and heavyweight turnout with neck, occassionally he had all 4 on...he is a wuss spends about 3hrs out in cold winters!

hope valley saddlery on ebay (hvs) are selling off the Rambo XL rugs, this is what I use on my pure ID they are fantastic! Problem is Horsewear have discontinued them and are bringing out the same version in Amigo - so the quality wont be as good and the material not as strong. I have managed to stock up for my lad for the next few years so am hoping I'll never have to buy another one!!

HI,

I have a very large Warmblood (+17hh), and I love the Mark Todd turnout rugs, he has pleanty of room in them and they stay put really well

I find the Shires rugs fit the clydie and the gypsy cob we have well as they allow for wide chests and necks. They are also not too expensive, which is great as Stinky seems to outgrown them every year but I think he will stay in his 6'3s for the moment and Farra seems ok her in 7' ones.

WHAT???? Horsewear are stopping Rambo rugs? Didn't know this, better start stocking up if that's the case, what a nightmare

I have a 16.2/16.3hh ID/WB who has huge shoulders & is, in my saddlers words, 'built like a house'!

I like Rambo for him - I have the Duo & whilst it was expensive this winter was my 3rd winter and the rug is still going strong with minimal repairs! The WB rugs seem ok but as others have said Masta aren't great for him. I like the Mark Todd rugs and Premier Equine too.

I know others with big horses have said the Amigos are good but I found they weren't roomy enough across the chest.

Funny isn't it as they don't fit hovis at all!
I find masta fit the nicest on my chunky boy (see piccies in earlier post for an idea of his size)
