My family own a farm and a livery of ours (customer) wants to register our family farm name as a prefix (under their name) I’m currently in a dispute with my father over this and was looking for options.

ive said no, it’s our family farm name and I would like the prefix to be registered under our name.
The customer wants it registered under theirs.
I fully understand that the name isn’t “owned” by either of us until one of us registers it first.
I want to breed myself in the future so would like to use my own family farm name understandably.
The “customer” has no ties to our family farm except she rents a stable from us and we all know liveries come and go over the years which means they will then leave with our name as a prefix.
if they were to register it first, what would be the “cons” for me/my family? Are they then able to set up a stud business under the prefix name as they will obviously have the right to the name registered as a prefix? (Or is a business automatically set up when a prefix is registered) Is there any other negative impacts I should consider? In the long and short of it, this customer is trying to blindsight my old father and has stated many times how we should stop livery all together and just have a stud business on our farm with them as co-owners, it’s very apparent to everyone except my father unfortunately that they are trying to take over the yard/farm. I’m trying my best to protect our family farm, name and father and just want to 1000% make sure if there’s any other “consequences” that may arise if they do register our farms name as a prefix under their name (we won’t be co-owners they want it to themselves)
Sorry if I sound daft in my questions!

Agree.
Avoid the what’s, why, discussion.
Just take the name yourself before they do.

I have to say, it’s a weird thing for a livery to be wanting to do and if they persist I’m not sure I’d have them as a livery for much longer. Benefit of the doubt, hopefully they are just having a momentary brain blip.

That is seriously odd and very manipulative. I'm afraid I'd not only be registering the name today but giving the livery notice. She rents one stable and wants to register the name of your farm as her own stud prefix? Just No.

Unfortunately my father seems to be on the liveries side ? but the woman is a narcissist, very very clear to see - but not to my father!
I know it’s going to cause major arguments if I register it (I reserved it yesterday but know that isn’t “safe” until it’s registered fully) everyone I’ve spoken to have said the same. It’s extremely odd and I feel like there’s a motive behind their decision to try and prefix the name

Also the “customer” called me yesterday to say I CANT own or register a prefix as I don’t own a stallion or a mare that’s currently in foal. (I own a gelding and a 10 year old mare for reference)
How true is this? On all the forms and all the research I’ve done online it doesn’t mentioned I need to “prove” I’ve got a stallion or pregnant mare that’s about to drop!

she’s a narcissist, everyone can see it apart from my father unfortunately so definitely no “blip” there’s some sort of motive behind this!
I’d of registered it yesterday, but I know it’s going to cause major arguments and my father will fall out with me because this customer has him wrapped around his finger and he can’t see it!!

Absolute rubbish. You do not need to be breeding to register the prefix!

Be aware that when you register the prefix, say - Smith's Farm - that will be then registered to your name.
That does not stop another person registering a foal/horse with a generic non breed society passport agency such as the BHS or Pet ID as Smith's Farm Blackie even if you ensure the prefix is registered to your name.

However, most registered breed societies will require anyone breeding 'that' breed to register the prefix with the CPR 1st, before registering it with them.

It would help you if you knew what (if any) this eejit is going to be breeding, pure bred, Heinz??
If it were pure or part bred xyz then you could ensure that you picked the right societies to attach to your registration application.

Finally, there are a good many very similar sounding prefixes out there, it only needs one different letter.....

We have a total random local who uses our farm name!!!! It's quite specific and was quite frustrating when I went to register it!
