I know Im being a bit dense, but I want to prefix any foals my girly produces. She is an unreg Fell, and for her 1st foal will be going to a sport pony stallion who is prefixed to the stud where he stands. My question is, can I prefix the resulting foal with my own prefix? (ie Im Rosehip Cavies, and would like to use the Rosehip prefix when breeding horses too)
Also, do I have to register this prefix, how much will this cost, and where do I do it??!
Ive bred foals before, but would now like to take it seriously and breed properly.
Thanks in advance!

You need to speak to the lady at the Central Prefix register. She is very helpful. Its not very expensive. You will need to think of where you want to register the foals - Fell Pony society or do you want to register them as Sports Ponies.
I haven't got her number but you could google it.

Sarah Stegall at the SPSS is very helpful too. My prefix is registered with the CPR then the SPSS. If I breed any horses or natives in the future I will need to register my prefix with the relevant societies.

You can do a search on the CPR website to see if the prefix you would like is in use. Search the first three letters under the sounds like search criteria to see the most.

Yes you will be able to use your prefix for your foal and as above, Gina Dent is very helpful. You need to send off the application form to the society you choose to register your foals with along with the payment which I think is £20. The society will then do what's needed with Central Register. You can also check online to see if your prefix is available.

Well as Melly is unreg I cant passport etc through the Fell Society - I enquired about registering her as part bred and apparantly I need to DNA both dam, sire and her...hmmm!- The stallion I will be using (Painted Percy, http://www.chorleystud.com/page2.html) is SPSS Reg, and is also Homozygus, so I'll be wanting to reg the foal with CHAPS... I'll prob reg my prefix with the spss. Is that right? Sorry, totally dense!!
Im hoping in the long run to register as a welsh pony breeder. x

No, you have to register your prefix with the first studbook you use it with (in this case CHAPS as neither parent is graded spss). If you want to have the foal then overstamped by the spss you should really extend your prefix to them at the same time.

You can join the WPCS without being a breeder so it might be wise to consider doing that now (you get a nice big Journal and several newsletters each year so that you can find out what stallions are avialable etc). If you are a member you can also extend your prefix to them as well without registering a foal once the initial procedure with the CPR is completed.

Ciss that is so helpful!! I dont know who 'Percy' is reg with then if he's not spss..... he must be reg with someone right?
I'll get onto the WPCS to join so at least that is then sorted. Blimey, its more complicated than I thought it would be! Sheep are definately easier!
Basically then, I need to reg my prefix with the CPR, and then when I put Melly to Percy,I can prefix that foal and passport it with CHAPS? Do I have to reg with CHAPS before hand? What if Percy isnt reg with CHAPS? Im so sorry Im asking all thse questions!
Thanks for all your help! x
