I don't wish to start a should you/shouldn't you debate. I'm simply wondering how many of you managed to ride through the nausea, extreme fatigue and dizzy spells of first trimester?
Sadly I just couldn't. What with stable chores and a full time job I was exhausted and had morning and evening sickness!! However it does pass and you will feel almost normal after the first trimester!
I did with my first - I struggled through to around 7 months. However am currently 32 weeks pregnant and gave up riding about 10 weeks this time. Just so tired and sick and later in pregnancy got low blood pressure and kept fainting! Missing it loads though so can't wait til the new year when I hope to be back on board!
I think you have to do as little or as much as your body copes with. I was lucky and carried on as normal, happy hacker, up to 7 months. I was moving heavy field hay feeders up to the last few weeks, probably unwisely.Be guided by your own body regardless of what anyone else thinks.
I didn't! I had always planned to ride gently in the school in the first trimester then stop, but I felt so utterly rubbish I think I managed to ride once or twice.
I provided great amusement to passing drivers as I stood in gateways throwing up! Horse was a saint! I rode with both mine until 36ish weeks, tbh, the fresh air & exercise perked me up no end!
I did with my first - actually felt better if I had ridden, the second I gave up at 6 weeks as felt so awful ! Also I felt differently about it second time round and was quite happy to stop psychologically as well as physically.
Not in first trimester... I was very sick up to 16 weeks... Threw up everyday in the wheelbarrow and the afternoons were a stay in bed job. Afterwards rode up to 20 weeks only... I couldn't dismount!! Goodness knows how ladies still ride when bump is big I do not know! I could only walk aswell, trotting really hurt!
I was not riding, but running with my first one. Did stop when it felt wrong and it worried me, I think it was around the 5 months mark, then started doing water aerobics. That gave me terrible leg cramps. I think the water was too cold. I resigned myself to walks with the dog.
I had to light up a scented candle when I was brushing my teeth ... that was the worst, brushing my teeth! the nausea was bad and somehow looking at the candle and perhaps the smell kept my mind off and I could then brush my teeth.
Hopefully, it would all pass and you can enjoy the rest of your pregnancy. All very exciting, good luck
I've just had the pleasure of leaving the first trimester ! Unfortunately I just couldn't ride at all, I rode twice during it I think, as from weeks 8-12 I was just ghastly , very sick and couldn't eat so no energy at all. Even mucking out was exhausting . So glad to say that it does get better. I'm just over 14 weeks and getting back to normal . Lunging and hacking out again !
I am 16 weeks pregnant at the moment, I stopped playing polo at 11 weeks, but I am lucky enough to have a full time groom during the summer, so she did pretty much all of the hard work as I was absolutely worn out, without her I couldn't have carried on.
It was pretty hard going as I couldn't tell anyone about the pregnancy and had to come back to the lorry to change ponies one day as I felt so sick all game. I ended my season 6 weeks early as I figured its ok me getting myself battered and bruised on the polo ground, but I should look out for my baby! The ponies were delighted to go out on their holiday so early, they all look like barrels on legs!
Ironically I've actually started to feel sicker now that I did in my first trimester, I spend most of today being sick...it sucks so much.
Thanks for all the replies. I'm delighted I'm not in the minority! Despite great ambitions to keep riding my sensible little horse it just hasn't happened. The energy consumed walking up the field to check on the horses is almost too much. Although the stories of ladies riding up to the end make me think I just need to try harder.
On my first pregnancy I had extreme nausea for 16 weeks. When it finally passed I found I was extremely nervous on the horse so I stopped. But then I was out of the saddle for a further 9 months after the baby arrived due to birth complications. I wasn't banking on being out of the saddle for 18 months so I swore it would be different this time. I had a serious dizzy spell while riding (alone as usual) and it freaked me out, it was a really horrible sensation
I backed my 4 yo 7 or 8 weeks pregnant in July...kept wondering why I was: A: Struggling with the heat so much and B: getting home from sessions with him and feeling so totally and utterly exhausted..I did ride him a couple of times after I found out, despite feeling so utterly grimbo...had planned to keep him ticking over during summer school hols (not much child care for mini CCW) but found I couldn't manage it...planned also to spring (!) back on him once hols over and do a bit thro autumn then turn away over winter...but combination of mostly crud weather and utter knackered ness continuing despite nausea passing has put paid to it so far...jury is still out on this...still like to get back on...but figure the horse is really not coming to any harm..and by the time baby comes along early march, any time after that will be a good time to get back on board....still a bit gutted not to be finally riding him on tho after having done two years on the ground with him...but hey ho, at least he's been backed and was a very good boy. So can't complain really. Have I mentioned I'm a bit gutted and in two minds as to what to do. Yes, about 3 times...
I rode up to 20 weeks in the school only as too worried about other road users to hack but around tbat time my bump got too big to get off comfortably! Luckily no morning sickness or exhaustion so that wasn't never an issue for me. Only another 13 weeks left and counting - can't wait to get out and about again.
I'm lucky I don't have morning sickness I just feel queasy and faint. I try to ride 2 a day but if I feel really bad I give them the day off. I make sure I keep having little snacks when I feel ill. I do have help now to do the yard as we have 7 in and I found it too much.
