My young cat is very pregnant and has been suffering diarhoea the past few days. Do you think it's related to the pregnancy or is it something else? Sorry, I've never had a pregnant cat before!!

More likely something else- has she been wormed recently? She should ideally be wormed a week or so before giving birth. What are you feeding her? She should probably be on a good quality kitten food at this late stage and prepare to feed her ad-lib kitten food when she's lactating. How bad is the diarrhoea? Does she have normal stools too? Is she eating and drinking?

She was wormed about 3wks ago. She gets IAMS dry biscuits twice a day and plenty of fresh water. She isn't doing any solid poos. They are not pure liquid but very runny and she only just makes it to the litter tray. You can hear her tummy gurgling as she runs past! She seems fine otherwise tho. Not sure when kittens are due as it was an unexpected pregnancy. She's very big now and her teats are much more pronounced and she is just sleeping a lot.

Forgot to say, yes she's eating and drinking normally and she's doing about 2 or 3 of these runny poos a day. Thanks.

Is she getting anything else to eat? Human food or milk? I think maybe you should take her to the vet, 2 days of diarrhoea (although it doesn't sound like it's extremely bad) will make her dehydrate quickly and you'll want her in good health to give birth. Do consider getting the Iams kitten food when she gives birth anyway and feed ad lib. Sounds like she's been very lucky to end up with someone who cares!

I have booked her in for tomorrow at the vet! I have just thought, she has been drinking the left over milk in my daughters cereal bowl the past few mornings. Could this cause it?

could be the milk, but your doing the right thing getting her checked. Sometimes cats can get illnesses that can be passed to the kittens so good idea to rule out any potential problems.

It could be the milk- cats are unable to digest it. In fact, caucasian humans are the only adult animal to be able to digest milk, all other mammals lose the enzyme required when they are weaned.

Just spoke to my mum who shows and breeds cats.

She said it isnt normal and that the cats toilet habits should remain normal throughout.

Did you know your cat was pregnant when you wormed 3 weeks ago?

Let me know if you need me to ask her anything else.

ps - she finished delivering 7 healthy babies 25 minutes ago! (well the cat delivered, mum assisted lol!!)

Cats and quite a lot of humans cannot digest cows milk and it will cause runny bottom:mad:

I honestly would save your money, cancel the vet, stop giving her cows milk. Get her on to kitten food which has a higher protein and if you want to give her milk, she can happily have goats milk, which is brilliant for all baby animals and pregnant ones including humans:D

Make sure you worm her again after she has had the kittens and then worm the kittens when they are 2 weeks old with panacur paste, which you can get online or at the vet.

Enjoy, it's great to have kittens they are brilliant fun and very entertaining.

Thanks for all your advice guys! I will make sure she gets no more cows milk and get her the kitten food. No, I didn't know she was pregnant when I wormed her. It was just the standard Bob Martin stuff I used on her. I will make sure the cat and kittens are wormed at the right time too. She is less than a year old herself and I didn't even see her come in to season or she would have been spayed by now! We live in the middle of nowhere so where she has found a tom, I have no idea!!! I will def post piccies when they arrive. She is getting really big boobies now so don't think it will be long. She has no intention of going in the lovely cardbox box with soft blankets in it tho. I have a feeling she'll have them on my daughters bed if I'm not carefull!!!

It can be very difficult to tell when they come into season but it generally happens at any time from 5 months old so you were lucky she waited this long! I would still go to the vets if I was you and get a decent wormer as Bob martin won't do tapeworm and is generally a bit ****.

Completely agree. Bob Martin wormer won't do the job. You will either have to take her to the vet to get her wormed properly BEFORE kittens are born and also would be worth Frontline her for fleas before kittens arrive.
She wouldn't have found a Tom, he most certainly would have found her - you should be able to get her spayed when she has stopped feeding the babies.

Okay dokay, will do. I have Frontline so will do that tomorrow. See, I'm useless when it comes to small animals. I thought she wouldn't come in to season til she was a year old. Duh! I will def be getting her spayed once babies are gone. Thanks for all your help and I'll put up some pics when the little uns arrive!

Thanks for all your advice guys! I will make sure she gets no more cows milk and get her the kitten food.

Please take some advice from your vet regarding the kitten food - and do make sure she is fully recovered from her entiritis before you consider changing her to a different food. As it could just compound the issue.

And ditto the frontline - check with the vet before you administer it to your pregnant queen so late in her pregnancy.
