Have any of your had experience when your pregnant mare has had to go under general anestetic? My mare has an eye ulcer however the pupil remains fixed and they may need to do a preceedure under GA. They have said i may need to make a decision should it come to it between the eye and the foal.

if any of you have had a pregenant mare under GA your comments will be very much appricated!

Sorry if this doesnt make sense i have been administering meds every 2 hours since sunday and i am exhausted!

I knew a mare that had a pacemaker fitted when she was in foal, she pulled through and foaled successfully.

My mare had an operation on her withers, they had to remove some bone when she was infoal, with foal at foot, but they managed to do it under heavy sedation, all were fine. She actually has one eye, she had to have her eye removed during a previous pregnancy, when I saw her she had two eyes and when she arrived at mine she had one and some big blue stitches, she was fine and so was the foal she was carrying.

Thanks for that, doesnt makeme feel quite so bad about the prospect of her having to under go a GA. This the first foal i have bread so am really concerned i think the vet must be sick of me saying 'does this affect the foal?'

That's bad luck.... but radical treatment having a GA for an eye ulcer. One of my mares damaged her cornea on xmas day and the vet made sure she had atropine so as her pupil remained dilated. The large damaged area is now an ulcer that is healing well.

good luck

I know it is extremley bad luck, the ulcer has been caused by a trauma of some sort (possibly stabbed it with a branch in the woodland area of the padock of fench post) it is not soley the ulcer which is the concern but the pupil is fixed and despite giving atripine since sunday the pupil remains fixed. I have an eye specialist booked in for 2pm tomorrow so will know more about my options then.
