Apart from being able to compete at the Pet Plan areas, is there any other reason to be a full BD member to compete at affiliated Prelim level?

I thought there was a rule change about points, but it looks as though it is just the horse's results that are recorded and you can't receive points at Prelim level. Can anyone tell me if that is correct please? I've tried looking at the rule book, but I'm having trouble with my laptop flicking between pages.
 
I don't think there are any points at all for Prelim.
Reasons to compete affiliated: higher standard of surface, competition, prize money etc. Access to BD training etc. Also, you could move up and do Novice when ready?
On my horse's BD record from last year - the total points seems to have included the points from the two prelim tests we did. :eek:
 
You need to be a full member of BD to compete at prelim but your horse doesn't need to be.
There are special prelim points that you gather to qualify for the regionals at prelim level.
You need to be a member and so does your horse to compete at area festivals or regionals.

You can compete at any level with a day ticket.
 
Ive never been a member of BD but to be honest dont really see any point in registering to do just prelims when a lot of the venues are the same and use the same judges as unaffiliated competitions do.

That said, if its qualifiers and points etc you want to go for then certainly I would reg a horse and use the prelim test as a warm up for a novice test.
 
You get 'prelim points' now for if you want to go to the regionals :) They don't count as 'proper' points but are given out in the same way for each % as at the other levels.
 
Thanks for the replies. I was aiming to use it as a bit of a stepping-stone up to doing Novice and I would love to have a go at getting to the area festivals.

Near to me there is quite a bit of affiliated dressage with two quite local big venues. I think this is about the only option for us to start doing long arena tests too which I guess is more to do with the fact that the smaller venues just don't have a big enough arena. Also we are getting reasonably good scores at Prelim (68 & 72.5 this w/e) so I'd like to be moving up a bit. Unfortunately there are some bits of Novice tests (like counter canter) that we simply cannot do and I think there is months of work before we'll be anywhere near ready!

I've also been told that the judging is more consistent and that there is often a higher level of judge.
