For some reason I have allowed yard owner to talk me into taking Jack (the half camel) to do a preliminary dressage test (no 12 or something) this Wednesday. I haven't the foggiest what that is or what will be expected of me but she says not to worry that she'll be there shouting out what to do and where to turn. The competition was low on numbers so she's put down half the yard to do it. Will I have to wear show jacket etc and will I need to try and plait the three strands of mane hair he has left after winter in a series of combo rugs. Dunno why I let myself get talked into these things.

always have pre-prepared excuses as to why you will be busy/ill/unavailable/out of the country, ready for such eventualities

yes, id wear the jacket, do your best to plait the hair if possible, and try to get hold of a copy of the test asap, so you can have a look

Don't worry about plaiting!! It's much more important to know where a 10 and 20 metre circle goes in the school, where the markers are and a rough idea of the test so you can focus on your riding. Noone ever gets marked down for not plaiting, its much better to not get lost and to enjoy yourself!!

Definately wear a show jacket. if you have time to plait I would - I dont think I have ever gone to dresage unplaited. The overall picture for the judge should be good so it does help. Also - have a reader for your test, but learn it as best as you possibly can beforehand, just in case the reader gets lost or you cant hear her. Most of all - stay relaxed, go out and enjoy it! Think of it as a schooling session away from home!

I should perhaps mention it's the first time I've ever travelled him or had him in an indoor school so not expecting great things - just going to think of it as a learning experience for both of us.

Gah i have my first dressage test on Sunday! Am dithering over whether to plait or not! My plaiting skills are dreadful so am tempted to just pull his mane so its a few inches long and leave it nicely on one side...?

Holly (E is taking) is a Sec D so we won't need to plait hers will we?!
