So I was hoping Peggy’s old PE half neck would see her out but after 12 plus years the inside is wearing out. The outside is still pretty good so the rug doesn’t owe me anything. I would like another as it fits her nice and she doesn’t mind it being a bit heavier and it’s got really good coverage for all the wind up here. But I’ve read they aren’t quite as good as they used to be. Anyone had one recently?

I haven't got any experience of the longevity of PE rugs but I am really happy with the Rhino I bought recently. I got it at half price in the Eileen Douglas sale- £99 instead of just over £200.

I'm delighted with it so far. Fits beautifully and no leaks despite being worn in all day torrential downpours. it also has a 3 year warranty for waterproofness.

Just seen the response above- it was posted as I was typing. That is the one I have!

My cob normally wears a 6'3 but sometimes they are a tiny bit too long- 6'0 are much too small (really he probably needs a 6'2!). The 6'3 in the model above fits him perfectly, so I suppose they may come up a tiny bit short in length. For reference he is a very wide, deep 14.2 cob. A big horse body on dumpy legs!

That is a brilliant price. Unfortunately I need a 200/250g. I don’t mind getting her a full neck but she does just as well in a half neck. But their doesn’t seem to be any half necks on offer so maybe will look at full necks too. Thanks folks.

I bought 5 rugs from Swish in spring, 2x 200g, 3 x 350g. They are well priced compared with PE or other high end brands and I'm pleased with the quality so far, they've only had a couple of months use but they seem strong and don't move. My old PE rugs were great at first but the necks died easily, probably my old rug wrecker didn't help but they were too expensive to replace so many at once. I expected Swish to be lower quality than they are, would definitely recommend.

If you like the PE shape you could have a look at the Rambo Optimo's as they're MASSIVE and that deep/ lot of coverage style. I had a PE turnout that lasted for years and I adored but after hearing mixed things about newer ones I went to the Optimo and it has been great.

Could add a liner underneath?

I have always thought PE rugs come up small!
Perhaps it depends on the shape of your horse - I was buying for cobs

On my old chunky tb, PE managed to be too small and too big at the same time. He had a big chest and shoulders so they were tight there but too deep and too long.

My current tb who's a lighter type takes 6'6" in Amigos and Rhinos, 6'3" in PE and between 6'3" and 6'6" in weatherbeeta.

Rhino good rugs for the money don’t last long, three winters max they can give some horses sore withers if you buy the ones with the necks that come off .

PE good rugs used to come up big now come up to size they fit ID’s very well that’s why they are my choice atm.

Unless they have changed the quality of them you have been very unlucky with Rhinos. Mine are 7 years old and have never leaked or rubbed once.

Rhino are my standard buy and chuck rug they don’t last long and are always rather short in the depth for my horses .
I have had two horses get fistula on the wither wearing the Rhinos with detachable hoods in wet weather it’s caused by the metal fittings for the hood .

I did think this but I’ve been looking for liners for the other pony and they are quite expensive so would bring it up to the price of a 200g anyway.

that’s been really helpful everyone. Thanks.

Just in case it's any help:

Derby House Elite Standard 200g Liner Under Rug | Free Delivery* | Rideaway UK (rideawaystore.com)

And it would have a further 10% off. I know some people prefer not to use liners but just in case it's useful thought I'd post it as I'd seen them earlier in the week and thought they were a good price.

My experience of Rhino has been more like your's than GS's, albeit my rug isn't quite 7 years old but it's never let me down.

I changed to Swish rugs last year. Really good prices especially the heavier rugs compared to Rhino/PE. I like the fact that all turn outs are 1200d, Very happy so far but too early to tell how long they will last. They are a more generous cut than Rhino but works best for you deoends on your horse

I've got a 50g Swish waterproof in heavy rain on its 3rd winter. For the price I've been impressed.

Plus its a good fit on a growing cob (big bum)

Love these rugs for my lightly built boys, but I was disappointed seeing bits of rubbed out mane caught in the metal neck fastenings. I think I'll stick with combos in the future!.

Ooo

Ooooh do these ones fit the horsewear range?

I usually use the liners without the shoulders velcro'd in and so all the liners will fit any rug. It looks like the shoulder tabs are in the right place to fit with the horseware though if you would want to use them too :)

I found Rhinos to be quite short on my fat little pony. I put it on for the first time and the livery yard owner asked why was he wearing a mini skirt?!

Mine has lasted about 8 years but as it's a mw, it gets used this time of year until I clip then when it gets warmer so not all winter.

I like the half neck rugs, both my wb and rhinos are this style, seem to work on high withered tb.

I love my PE 0g turnout had it for about 4 years and its still perfect. only problem i find is when its soaking wet its very heavy and takes a few days being hung up before it’s completely dry again.
My rug of choice is swish. I struggle with alot of rug makes as my horses shoulders are ginormous ID type. PE & Swish fit the best!

Wouldn't touch PE rugs with a 10,000ft barge pole.

I got GrayMo a Swish rug a few years ago. He was a medium built, tall tb and it fit him nicely. I wouldn't have put it on anything chunkier or with a bigger neck.

The one and only swish rug I ever bought was cut wonky and water poured through I won’t be trying those again
I do have weatherbeetas that have lasted well and I like the ones with the triangle shaped pads on either side of the wither I go up a size in those .
I do think PE make the best zero fill rugs
They are however heavy because of the heavy outer fabric .

I bought the 100g Rhino above too, for my inbetween sized pony. I went for the bigger size and it only just fits, they definitely come up small. I have Rhino's in the same size from 2 years ago and they are very generous? Have to say though the quality is fab and the rug dried sooo quickly after all that rain, whereas my friends rug looked wet through.
