Premier Equine Rugs?

Sorry - I'm a bit of a late comer to this, and was reading through thinking sounds like shires is your best bet, until I get right to the end! ;)

Have you looked at weatherbeeta?

I use either Horseware or PE on my girls, and like both, but if the PE is too tight in front, it is likely you will find the same thing with Horseware IMO. Both have a straight cut neck, which suits my lot just lovely (including the PE on my arab Faracat - its the only rug that's anywhere deep enough for her monstrous body!)

Otherwise, try looking at some of the HKM rugs? I don't know how successful or long lasting the HKM rugs are, but they look like they are built for big shouldered, wide warmbloods, so may fit your guys?

Have you tried Ruggles? Sorry if they have already been mentioned I haven't read all the replies. I really like them. I am using Maxwell mill on my growing cob £30 for lightweight off eBay. I use the lightweight with 100g stable quilt underneath. I will buy her ruggles when she stops growing.

Bucas look great, but at £150 each they won't be getting them unless I find some in the sale :D

Weatherbeeta only seem to do 1200 denier 100 gram in a combo version. If they did a standard I think it would be perfect :)

Haven't tried Ruggles yet as the rugs I want are out of stock in the sizes I need :D Apparently will be new stock in March, so I will probably try them next :) Did look at Maxwell Mill, but 2 rugs would be too easy to pull sideways and wreck I think. And I think no-fill on it's own makes them colder, hence the 100g thing!

I'm just too fussy I think. Need to get a grip :D

Have you tried Fal? They're also good on my boys - although I don't think they're as good quality now as they used to be (hence me switching to PE). Keep an eye out on E-bay or other 2nd hand sites for some 2nd hand ones that are at least 6 years old - this is when they switched production overseas I believe.

The purple Bulldogs with green binding were definitely made in this country so worth keeping an eye out for them.

Interesting. Now I'm intrigued as to how your's is bred. One of mine is 66% Crabbet, so she's pretty chunky for an arab and she's the one that was swamped by the PE rug.
Bucas look great, but at £150 each they won't be getting them unless I find some in the sale :D
Do keep an eye out, I picked a new one up for £40 on ebay.

Have you looked at the plus size Amigo, fits one of mine that is too big for anything else. The Rambo Wugs are far too tight across the shoulder but the Amigo plus is much deeper and roomy round the shoulder but not too far back at the wither like the Masta and weatherbeeta ones which both rub his huge withers. Scats had some on sale recently.

Thanks so much for all the suggestions! I may have solved the problem - I have ordered 2 chest expanders. Hopefully they can keep wearing their lovely Swish rugs, but the necks will sit a tiny bit further back :)

Having searched every possible make of rug and not found anything in the correct combination of denier/fill that seems like it will actually fit, hopefully this (much cheaper!!!) solution will work. Please keep your fingers crossed :D

I wouldn't recommend them because I've had awful trouble with them.
First; the Buster I bought leaked, my pony was permanently damp in wet weather and my god did it stink. He wasn't sweating because I took it off him and put the same weight Horse Ware rug on him with no issues at all.
Second; the quality of stitching is atrocious; the neck strap stitching broke with one strap falling off within 3 weeks. Same with the chest straps stitching starting to unravel.
Third; the Velcro started to fray and was stitched so closely to the edge of the Velcro that the Velcro pulled off because the stitching couldn't hold it on any longer.
Fourth; the fit wasn't brilliant, it was extremely tight around the chest and neck and hanging off the quarters. I exchanged it for the next size up which was then way too big.
Fifth; It rubbed his mane off due to the neck being too small/tight so that every time he put his head down to graze the pressure was immense from the rug. I put my hand underneath to check and it was painful.
Sixth; I emailed Premier Equine to complain about the quality of the rug which for the money should have lasted longer than just under 2 months!!!! and got no response whatsoever.
Seven; I've now gone back to Horse Ware rugs and have had no quality, fit or leaking issues whatsoever and which have lasted years without falling to bits.

I hate them. Have tried them on various horses. When wet they are really heavy, leaked and very long. Went back to Rambo and Amigo.

I like PE rugs; however they aren't the widest in the chest! Bill has a half neck one (which are getting very hard to find) and it is deep enough for him as he is a 17h ISH (3/4 tb 1/4 ID) however it isn't overly wide in the chest at the front - and he isn't very wide!! I doubt would fit on a cob type tbh.

otherwise the swish rugs are very good :)

I don't like them either. Fit wasn't great (tight on chest), and the buckles snapped within a couple of weeks. So never got the chance to try it in wet weather. I too emailed customer service, but never got a response.
Sticking to Swish from now on.
Mine are wide chested, and the ones I have found to fit are Swish, Weatherbeeta (original not freestyle), and the original Fal.
Weatherbeeta don't seem to last as long as they used to. My Fal lasted 10 years and was still going strong until the local thieves took it off her. Can't comment on how long the Swish last as they got stolen as well.

I've only ever had their fly and SI rugs so can't judge their other rugs.

IME their sizing is totally random: I bought a fly/buster rug for my traddie cob; one I bought a few years ago and it was supposed to be a 6'3", which is his size, and it actually came up as more like a 6'0 (but I kept it coz it fitted the mare OK); the other was their belly-flap SI rug which I bought last year. It again was supposed to be a 6'3", but it was absolutely HUGE and completely swamped him - and he's a big lad!! I'd think it just might be right for a Clydesdale!!! So I sent it back.

The other rug I've got of theirs is the Ultra Lite Fly rug which is made of very light material. It didn't last very well TBH, I had to repair it quite early on, the shoulder seam in particular needed attention, plus every time I put it on my mare she for some reason rubbed herself, it obviously made her itch. Dunno why. So I'm putting it on FB/e-bay.

A few years ago they did do a ride-on quarter sheet made of the same ultra light material as the Ultra Lite flyrug; I bought two as they were on special offer/sale - and found them invaluable. It is a pity they don't seem to feature in their latest catalogue which I got today. They really were/are a very handy little item for summer riding and I really don't know what I'd do without them TBH.

I like PE fly rugs: they are a cheaper alternative to the Rambo rugs, BUT I am growing increasingly cross with them about their ridiculous sizing!!! They need to standardise this and get it sorted before they lose more customers like me............it is incredibly annoying having to return rugs all the time.
