Hi I wonder if anyone would be able to help, I've seen the premier equine rugs and been really impressed with them and wondered which of the rugs you would all recommend. I'll be looking at getting various rugs for different times of year. What would you recommend?

Premier Equines come up large so they advise to take a size under.

I personally love a good old Amigo/Rhino/Horseware etc rug!

Found Shires to be flimsy and keep clear or Requisite rugs.

I would reccomend any make that wasn't PE. My buster trio leaked like a sieve and was so heavy it took 2 of us to hang it up when wet. We didn't even get 2 winters out of it before we had to find something better. I use amigo's but after having 2 horses in rambo wugs for the first time last winter then I would never chose anything else now.

Thanks for the tips, will be avoiding those then. Will have a look at some of the suggestions here thank you.

I've had Premier Equine, Masta, Wethebeeta, Mark Todd rugs etc over the years & I have thought for several years that they are too pricey. The last few years I have bought 'Axiom' rugs from an Ebay seller & they have been great. They are reasonably priced, they are nice & deep in the body & they are properly sized. I've used them for the last 3 years & I have been very pleased with them. They fit well, have been waterproof & warm & I've had no rips or damage so far. Save money & try these out! ;)

My PE rug is great quality and has stood up to some serious abuse. I have noticed, however, that it is super heavy in comparison to other brands, which makes me question how comfortable it is for the horse?
I quite like Swish rugs as an alternative.

I have a PE medium weight and a lightweight. Both have been great for my mate although they do come up large. Never had a problem with either of them. :)

I used to use PE and agree with others they aren't as good as they used to be.
I would recommend the Power Turnout from Bucas.

We use the PE 450g Busters at work and we weighed one that had been on a horse in the field for 4 hours in the rain - just over 3 stone! Yup! 3 stone! Would you really want your horse to be carrying that around all day and all night if they also live out? That's a hell of a lot!

I quite like Derby House rugs - they fit my TB's and Shetlands well.

All 3 of mine wear PE rugs, and I haven't had a leaky rug all winter. The PE rugs are the only ones that fit my youngster well and offer enough depth in the body to cover her, without looking like she is wearing a mini skirt!

I like Amigo too - I have yet to find a horse that WB or Shires fit well on (but possibly that I stick to similar types of horses!)

I'm saving up for a Horseware Rambo. Already have the liners, now just need the big buy!

We have the PE ones and they're good, few rips and stitching issues, but the main thing is that they're so heavy!

I have that horse :) 15hh chunky, big shouldered welsh cob just in case anyones wondering...

Don't know about PE rugs, but I love their saddlecloths. Rug-wise, I've been impressed with Weatherbeeta, Shires and Ruggles - all of which have seemed to stand up well to overnighting out in all weather, and fit the aforementioned big boy perfectly :D

I was talking to my rug wash lady and she said the pe turnouts are really heavy when wet. Another person advised using the liner system. Ive used the axiom rugs good quality and lovely huge tail flaps but they kept slipping. Personally amigo and weatherbeeta fit my tb a dream. He does also have a mark todd and shires 400g turnout combos which are brilliant

I gave up with mine. They fit really well and stand up to abuse (teeth!) but by god they weigh a ton! They don't dry very well either and it got to the point where my mum and I would be struggling to get the thing on the horses's back as it was so heavy - then we wondered how the horse felt carrying it around.
I've invested in Rambo everything for mine now and I wouldn't go back.

I've just bought a buster lite and I like it. It's nice and light weight. However I wouldn't touch anything that was heavier weight. My friend had them and I agree they are soooo heavy and take ages and ages to dry. I like horse wear ireland ones mainly. Rambo amigo etc.

I have a few PE rugs and they are nice rugs but very pricey. I don't go down a size but they are a bit more generous than Amigo or Derby House, especially in depth and around the neck/chest.

I have been buying Axiom rugs recently though. They fit well, work well, are tough as old boots and are cheap enough thay it is hardly worth cleaning and repairing them!

I also like swish rugs, really well designed rugs at a good price.

Seems to me that PE are completely random in their sizing. I bought one of their sweet itch rugs a few years ago in 6'3" which is my horse's normal size. It came up more like a 6'0 and had to go back.

This year I bought their SI hoody with bellystraps rug, it was WAY way too big - and had to go back. It came up at least two sizes too big :(

I tried one of their "Fly Lite" rugs in the special gauze-type material. Both of my horses starting scratching in it, I don't know what it was about the rug that did this, but it was noticeable. One horse has Sweet Itch, the other doesn't, but it was strange. Also it didn't wear particularly well, the material over the shoulder seam started to pull out as well as the front chest buckle area. Having said that, I've just sold it on e-bay and it made a good price even with all the defects pointed out!!! The advantage with these is that you can chuck it on and turn-out and don't have to worry about if it rains as these rugs don't go all heavy and clingey like ordinary fly rugs. But think they need to look at the design/durability a little more? Just my feeling anyway. I've not had any other PE rugs so can't comment. Their sizing is the main gripe I have. Their fly/SI rugs are good apart from that, do the job, and wear well.

The sizing issue is also a gripe I have with the new Weatherbeeta Combo Shield rug. I bought it, and got it home, and as was desperate put it on and left it overnight just for something to put on basically. Had a good look in the morning and it was just enveloping my boy like a bleddi shroud, it was awful! So of course having used it, not possible to return to the shop (it's on one of the on-line auction sites now, better not say which coz will be accused of "advertising"!!). I've always used Weatherbeeta rugs on my horses (both cobs) and have always trusted them to produce a rug that is true to size. So not impressed TBH.

My horse is a traddi cob and so not exactly "fine" - I find it very annoying when things don't come up true to size.

Astonishing! I didn't get round to weighing ours but I knew it was too heavy for my living out horse in the very wet 2013 winter so changed to Rambo.
