yay or neigh?

i really like the phoenix range and my boy has out grown his rugs so he does need new ones
(he he still in 6ft when he needs 6'6! bad mum!)

but they are quiet a lot of money (to me!)

so are they worth it??

any pros any cons??

thank you every one

Nay from me - too heavy and not waterproof were the complaints I had with the ones I bought.

Can recommend Rhino's though, worth every penny :)

Wouldn't touch them with a ten foot barge pole!

The old, original ones were great but now they are such a big company they are compromising on quility. As said above they are too heavy and aren't overly waterproof. I weighed one of the 450g busters at the yard that had been out for 4 hours in the rain. Normal rain, not light or heavy stuff just your average rain, and it weighed in at just shy of 4stone.

Way too much money for the quality these days, I always go for horseware or Rambo now, or actually Derby house rugs as they seem to fit the Shetlands really well.

I have a three I like them them a lot they fit the horses well ,win the least mane rubbing hood prize and they are very deep ( good on my big horses ) all of mine are very waterproof but they are heavy .
They last well but they are warm so I would recommend buying not more than 100 gramme one and using liners if necessary .

The lady on my yard has just bought one so I am keeping an eye on it with interest. I bought a new Derby House at the same time. It hasn't leaked in this torrential weather so far, they are out 9am-5pm. It is much deeper than the DH and has a better tail flap. The neck goes higher than the DH neck, although the horse wearing it has a short neck, so that may be deceptive. The DH rug has rain drops running off it - you can see how waterproof it is. The PE doesn't leak, but looks damper.

They did a 40% off sale on PE on Black Friday last year and this, so if her rug copes over winter I may buy one nof X year. I don't think they're worth full price. I hate the colours too, so girly.

I like the depth of PE but find that WB fit my big ID better across the shoulders/withers plus higher denier for turnout with a rug thug!

I would rather buy a good WB or Rambo than PE nowadays for my three

I wouldn't buy them as they get so heavy when wet that they are a pain to put on and off and can't be that comfortable for the horse. I much prefer Rambo or Rhino.

I used to like them, but bought two of their rainproof fly rugs this year, for different horses, and they both split in exactly the same place, on the side between the fastenings. I contacted them about it, and was told the horses had damaged them - don't believe in coincidence that much! I also was disappointed in the sweet itch buster I bought - third one for the same horse and the fit was different.

I've got the 40g PE and a liner to see how we got on. I personally prefer to have the half/high neck rugs but these seem to be as rare as unicorns now, I saw the PE has a higher than normal neck so I thought I would give it a try.

The 40g main rug is pretty good, it is very waterproof, I've not had any issues with it getting heavy when wet. I usually like leg straps as it can be very windy and is exposed on the winter grazing but so far we are getting on ok without. I like the tail flap with the strap to stick the tail through, I think that is helping keep it in place in the wind. The quality of the clips/straps seems fine. I'm pleased with the rug and would have another.

Using it with the liner however I'm not as keen. I don't know if I'm doing it wrong but it seems quite a faff and it isn't ideal for my non horsey helpers. When it is wet and I take it off, if I leave the liner attached it doesn't dry that well compared to without the liner on (and compared to my non liner system rugs). I'm also unsure how long the liner will last for with just a velcro fastener.

I don't use the neck attachment so no comment on that.

Love them, horses have the ballistic nylon buster ones in mw and hw and pony has a lightweight which is polyester. Both types repel water well and I honestly haven't noticed them leaking or getting heavy, except for one mw which I was warned by rug washing lady needed reproofed as its over 5 years old.

Fittings are so sturdy in comparison to rhinos we had before. .

Never had an issue with leaking but they get so heavy when wet. To the point where I am pretty sure my gelding hated wearing it (snappy and grumpy when rugging). I have now swapped to a Bucas Select, much lighter = much happier horse.

I've had to discount them just on fit (tried other peoples' for sizing)

On my tbs they manage to be both too big and too small at the same time. Too tight across the shoulders and so deep that would easily be stepped on when getting up from rolling.

Some models of Weatherbeetas (I have takas but sold the landa as too tight), Rambos and Rhinos and FALs are good on mine.

I have really mixed thoughts on PE - I seem to own an enormous collection for the one horse, really like the lightweights & coolers etc, the fly rugs are the best I've come across, but not so sure about the heavier turnouts. They all fit well but to echo others, when the winter rugs get wet they are seriously heavy. Weigh an absolute tonne to try and drag off the poor horse and take ages to dry out (even with a rug drier!)
I've had mine a couple of years and they do put up with a lot of rain before any rain soaks through (and even then they are very small leaks), but I have heard of the newer rugs not being as good. The necks fit really well and are elasticated at the top so don't tend to get blown down in high winds, the tail flap is great too and despite the horse chasing around a lot they have never slipped around on her. To be honest I do reach for the Mark Todd winter rugs over the PE but this is mainly due to the weight issue - if they were lighter then I'd use them more. (PS - Mark Todd rugs are lovely!)

I used to love PE but this was back in the day when they were cheaper and better quality. I found they were one of the few that fitted my very big, deep, broad whimpy warmblood. These days I buy cheap rugs! Have got a gallop on my mare who is out 24/7 and even today I checked she was dry. Just damp at edges where water had seeped in. Also stays put well as she has sweetitch so likes to roll a lot and does not like to be caught - so trots away from me a lot. Also have a weatherbeata rain no fill on the pony, again not leaking and staying put! Love it as it is bright red so can see where he is easily!
