I have decided that my turnout rugs need an upgrade before next winter.

My elderly Arab runs cold so was hoping to pick up a really heavyweight turnout on sale.
Looking at the Premier equine 450gram ones.
Anyone got one?

Are they stiff? Actually waterproof? And worth the £££.
Or just pretty and a designer name?

I have only ever bought a saddle pad from them. It could stand up by itself and sat like a flying saucer on the horse!!!

Not had a 450g from them but did have a 300g for a previous horse. Expect it to be heavy and to get even heavier when wet but yes it should be waterproof. They’re not as good as they used to be but I still couldn’t find anything else I liked better last time I went rug shopping. If Arab is quite fine with a small chest then you may need to size down as they are quite roomy

That would be a very heavy rug IMO.
If you need one that warm I would also layer up.
My PE rugs are excellent though and I’ve used my 100g rug for many winters with no leakages.

I don't have the 450g but do have the 40g and 150g outers with several different weight liners going up to 450g total.

Ours are out 24/7 all year, so the outers (mostly the 40g) have had a lot of use over the 2 years we've had them. I'm really happy with them, definitely waterproof, no damage to them yet (amazingly!), and good adjustment options (they fit both our TB and stocky ISH very well, with no rubs anywhere). I'd buy them again in a heartbeat, worth the investment. They are heavy when the 200g liner is used and they are caked in mud, but so was every thick rug I've had previously.

Thank you so much. She is built like a large Welsh section b so normally ok for sizing.
I am going to look at a few other options after all the comments.

Seems to be a common theme that they are heavy, and i just cannot see myself using it then.

Just to point out that if you use two turnout rugs together, the breathability (and generally flexibility / comfort of cover on your horse’s body) is compromised
They are not designed for that, altho it is a common enough mistake.
But buying a really good quality, lower weight turnout rug and adding internal rug lining layers - that would be your best bet to avoid umpteen different weight turnouts in need of laundering each spring.
Will provide you with more options as weather and temperatures fluctuate. Good luck with the old mare.

Completely agree with this, if you're going to layer then an underrug/ liner and lighter turnout are the way to go.

In answer to your original question, I had a PE years ago and it was a great rug, the liners from it are still going over 15 years later. Personally I always go for a Rhino or Rambo now and they're not as heavy as the PE ones.

The PE turnouts can/used to come up quite roomy so bear that in mind.
They are also seriously heavy, and even heavier when wet - I wouldn’t want an older horse lugging one around.

Is a 450g really necessary???

Agree with others that I’d add a liner to a lighter weight rug if needed. And if investing in a good rug then go for Rambo.

I had a red premier equine heavy weight on my elderly Arab. Amazing quality. Great clips at the front. 100% waterproof. Worth the money.

Thank you. Good to know size wise. I had not thought about the weight.
She normally wears weatherbeetas and I have never found them too heavy. Obviously a PE rug pitfall with all these reviews.

She is needing a super heavy weight.
Technically she is 19 and fit as a fiddle, but feels the weather and was too cold in her 360gram on the colder days this year.
Will look at other options before purchasing.

The rambos are sadly a dreadful fit on her and rub her shoulders as not vented.

If you’re looking at other rugs then Mudrugs are very good rugs.
The clips and Velcro aren’t quite as good quality as PE but they fit well and I’ve found waterproof.
The top of the neck cover is elasticated so good for keeping draughts out.

I have a premier equine 450grm rug (actually had a few) and it is brilliant. Perhaps a little heavier than some others but 100% does the job. Very waterproof, very secure and never moves. Sadly my new horse runs really warm and I don't think it will get much use.
