I'm looking for a new heavy weight rug and considering the PE Buster but my girl is a 15.2hh Arab and I'm not sure if they are cut for big shouldered WB. Does anyone use them on LW horses? She can fill a Rambo and Amigo rug fine but the FAL rugs make her look like she's wearing her mothers clothes! hehe! I don't want to have to buy a Rambo as they are so expensive and I've had issues with Amigo's leaking (they have no shelter in the field but only out for 5 - 6 hours) so though PE would be worth a try...any recommendations?

i have a ruggles rug with neck rug from my two arabs - it fits well and the neck rug is generous so doesn't flap up and allow water under. if worried about leakages, get a LW no fill rug and stick it over the thicker rug - works a treat :)

ETA: I've heard PE rugs let water through on some horses (ie, i know a few people with PE rugs, some have been delighted with how waterproof they are, the other had soaked through horses!)

I had a PE that leaked. :(

What about a Rhino? I think that they are almost as good as a Rambo and are better than Amigos. Just out of interest, was the Amigo that leaked 600d or 1200d?

i am also interested in the 600d v 1200d question - as there is a theory that the higher denier rug will leak less quickly..

Weirdly it was the 1200D medium weight that leaks, only over one butt cheek but that cheek gets soaked in the good Scottish rain we get. She's worn the 600D rain sheet (no fill) in some torrential rain and it seems to take about 3 -4 hours of proper rain before it starts to leak but it does eventually (though it seems everyone's rainsheet whether expensive or not leaks after some of the monsoon rains we had this summer!) Going to check out ruggles, I think I like the PE cos it has the elastic neck top, she is the world worst for rolling the neck right down and caking her (really long) mane in mud!

I have 3 PE rugs, and use them on my TB. They are quite deep, but i'd rather them that than like a miniskirt on him like the one he has on atm :D:o Mine have never leaked, and i've had one for 3 years in good old Scottish winters, and its not had a rip yet, even after being worn by a typical playful 4year old gelding that tended to trash rugs within a week!

my bucas smartex leaked in scottish rain :o
long manes in mud - i know that horror... plaiting helps - especially when they find sheep muck to roll in too:o

I have the PE buster trio on a 16.2 TB. He looks a bit warmblood-esque, but is actually quite fine. I like the fit of it, but it's definately on the voluminous side. Comes down almost to his knees, and the sides of it would meet under the tummy if I did the surcingles up shorter. It looks quite snug, though, and isn't actually too big, I don't think. The neck always stays put, too, which I like.

Hope that helps :)

Oh, I have a rhino stable rug, btw, and really love the fit - it's spot on, so you could try one of them, maybe? (Turnout not stable, obv!)

I asked this same question last year for my Arabs, the feedback I got was brill rugs but would probably swamp my boys. I opted for the Masta heavy weight instead fits a treat!!!

Is Scottish rain more penetrating than welsh rain, I wonder? ;)

Hehe! Maybe not more penetrating but it might be more persistent?! Or maybe it's the driving wind that make the rain all that more impressive? I dunno but it's pretty shocking at the moment!

I might give the masta a bash, they are relatively cheap...decisions, decisions!

My small arab mare spent last winter in a PE heavy weight rug. It does feel very heavy but fits well and she seems happy enough in it. Certainly very warm. The only problem was that it rubbed her mane.

Its disgusting out! I found the masta rain rug leaked and shrank :o. It also allowed water down the neck and gaped a bit. But masta stable rugs fit really well round the neck..
