My horse has a heavyweight 360g Weatherbeeta Orican Combo and his mane each year gets rubbed out and each year its getting thinner.

My questions
- which of the Premier Equine 450g turnouts are best at not pulling the mane out? The combo or detachable neck?

- does the elastic on the hood by the ears rub the mane out or dig in?

- do the rugs come up big or average size. Mine has a 5'9 but it is a tiny bit long on him but normal 5'6 rugs are too short. Would I need a 5'9 in PE rugs?

Thanks

they come up true to size if not slightly large. Think it depends on your horse, i used the integrated neck last year and it rubbed my horses mane out, my friend is using it this year no probs! This year i have a combo, no probs with mane but issues with wither pressure

The neck is elasticated at the end, but i would say still relatively snug!

I've given up on rugs with necks. Sorry, not much help, but there you are. They are too expensive to experiment much.
So I've reminded Star that she's a horse, not a hamster and she has what remains of a nice thick mane which is 10" long. My last try at a 'neck' is a Snuggy Hood. We'll see.

I have the Stormbuster with the integrated neck - it hasn't rubbed my pony's mane but haven't really had it long enough to discover if it does yet but so far so good.

The elasticated bit on the neck is loose so doesn't rub.

The only thing is the sizing - my pony is a 5ft 9" and the body part is fine but the neck is far too long, I have to turn it back. So not really sure what size to say to go for, I'm leaning towards 5ft 6" but don't blame me if too small

I have the integrated neck for my old cob. This is the first winter he has grown his mane out, he has always been hogged in the past, and the neck hasnt rubbed any hair out. The neck is long but he quite likes the fact that he can tuck his ears in and keep the frost off!

I have the 450g stormbuster combos and they are great, and don't rub the mains, but I found the combos come up bigger (I reckon it is because there isn't a 'neckline' to secure the rug towards the front) so I go for a size smaller in their combos and normal size on normal neck rugs. Hope that helps!

I have the Winter Buster which is the one with a detachable neck on my TB. It is brilliant and hasn't rubbed his mane at all. Keeps him very warm and happy too.

I have a heavy weight I bought 4 years ago. This is the second year I have actually used it, and first outing at present yard (so obviously its got to be new...duh!). Anyway, I have 5'9" one, it is a snug fit on my girl, but unlike the roomy Horseware light weight, and better fitting Slumberdown medium weight, does not appear to be putting any pressure on her withers, is not rubbing her rather ample mane out, and the elasticated cuff at the poll end of the neck is a god send. I do only use it on the coldest or days when the cloud is low and the wind is up. In fact one day this week, she came in with frosted ears, iced whiskers, feathers and tail, and the heavy weight rug was also frosted, so perhaps they should rename them insulators.

Have had mine in a 450g with detachable neck most of grotty parts of winter- brilliant rugs!!! Bought a load in various weights whilst in sale- well worth it.

The cut sits higher round the neck than alot of other brands- great for mine as high withered and they seem to stay put very well. The elastic on hood is by no means tight- but secure enough to keep the neck dry and snuggly. I go for the same size rug as usual- no probs there.

Re detachable or not for the neck- personally went for detachables- have mainly had necks on through winter though and had no problems with mane rubbing.
