So, massive update from us!

To recap, CS was due to go to Somerford PL. I think farcical best describes this. A few days before the competition, the drama started with quite frankly the creepiest PM. You know you've hit the big time when you have a pet Internet stalker!!!

Arrived at Somerford on Friday, got CS out to ride only to have a tractor join us trying to harrow!!! I was shouting, NMT was shouting (CS is TERRIFIED of farm machinery) but in he came. He wouldn't leave, or switch the engine off, and could only repeat "I've got to harrow" It was totally unclear where? Or for how long and poor CS was freaking out big time.

Tried to ride past it to get out but he span, bolted and tried to rear... With a few other horses also freaking out I just managed to get off and lead him past but the noise behind him was too much. He reared up in my face, pulled away and set off flat out in the direction of the road, colliding with a ridden stallion en route!

I KNEW the gates to the grounds (onto the main road) were propped open and all I could see in my head was him under a car, I've never ran so fast in riding boots (nor NMT in wellies!). Thankfully he went into one of the barns and stopped but both NMT and I were in bits, imagining the worst. An official complaint has been lodged, so I won’t say anymore on that bit.

I managed to ride him later and he was tense but not horrendously so and by this morning seemed back to business...

Warmed up foot perfect but sadly all went Pete Tong in the ring! I daydreamed my way through the walk, ended up at the wrong marker, got belled for an error, and when I repeated it he jogged twice Spooked badly twice in the zig zag and then again I went to sleep in the 3's and got some 2's (I have kicked myself repeatedly!) but the actual 2's were fab, as were the piris!!! A deserved 57.9% but soooooo disappointed with it all, not him, just me!

Onwards… CS has a moment of fame in Racing Post:

Turns out CS has a pretty nippy half brother in the form of Shifting Power, who was placed 4th in the Quipco 2000 Guineas earlier this month. They share the same dam - Profit Alert!

There are a few things that got lost in translation as the reporter had no prior knowledge of dressage/the levels etc. What I actually said was that he is currently the only ex racer competing at small tour at Premier League level. And that if he was able to do a CDI in the future he would be the first in a very long time albeit most records only seem to go back 20 years. This obviously got a bit muddled up before being published!

On Sunday we took the boys to the gallops! The sun was out and the ponies behaved...

Fig went first.

We had a walk, trot and gentle canter round. Then he wanted to let rip along the top, so we did! Then back to walk and the same thing all over again.

(We come flat out round the top of the hill and then I let him pick up or slow down as he pleases)

Then CS.

Wanted to go up into a gentle canter straight away, then came back to walk (very good boy!). Walked round the top and then went flat out down the bottom. A quick breather and then off they went again!

Such a sensible boy:

Lovely Sunday for all involved. Super chuffed with their behaviour. Not a murmur from either of them; seem to have really grown up since we last took them there! Fig was happy to go at his own pace, and CS was happy to really floor it!

On Wednesday we took both the boys out. CS for an Inter 1, Fig for M73 and AM98 (I know, eek!!!)...

Fig warmed up like a total pro. Really relaxed and concentrating. It was quite muggy and overcast, but he copes really well in that weather. Classes were tiny, so very quiet and we had the warm up all to ourselves. Lots of gear changes and then some working canter piri's to get him waiting and sitting. Just a couple of changes out the half pass; these are easiest to keep him soft over the back and he doesn't anticipate. Did those neatly so left them there.

Did a sweet M73, tight in the walk and a jog before the first walk piri. But lateral work fluid and the canter stayed soft. But other than that, mistake free.

Chuffed with AM98, got every change! Yes a few were a little tight, and that affected the work directly after. But we all have to start somewhere (I've never ridden at that level, and Fig definitely hasn't!). This felt more powerful than the Medium, and I was pleased with how I placed everything and felt like Fig had enough time and room to strut his stuff.

Bit miffed with the Medium mark - 63.97% (1st out of just 2 in the class!). I do agree with the comments, but was expecting 67%+ given how soft and accurate it was. On thinking it over perhaps I rode a little too cautiously which just didn't do us justice? However, over the moon with 64.87% for the Advanced Medium (went training, but I was the only one in the class)!!!! No marks below a 6 and that was for a slightly duff canter HP (thought we were going extended, so set out the corner hell for leather lol!) and a squiffy change, but scoring all the way up to 8's with the trot solid 7's to 7.5's

So, need to chill my beans (and keep Figs chilled), and remember to RIDE it all forward!

And then CS’s turn... He came out (esp given the weather) unusually hot and spooky! He warmed up nicely, took a bit of lateral work to get him powering through but was fairly on the ball. A couple of silly spooks led to some tightness in the ring. Fluffed the 2 x changes, but got everything else (including a 7 for one of the canter piri's!). A new personal best for CS at Inter 1 with 63.55%!!! And that includes mistakes!

CS felt really happy in the contact, is taking more of a pull in the baucher (for the bradoon) so I need to learn to ride that power but keep it soft.

We've both agreed that given they've been good at home, good at the gallops and now fantastic at a competition... They've earned a day off, followed by hacking and cantering in the fields.

They are both going to visit their Spanish trainer on Sunday for a lesson, fingers crossed they behave and the weather is nice!

Ah. It was you that stole our judge! I entered the Mediums at Arena UK yesterday but they had to cancel them as they couldn't get a high-enough listed judge. They implied that it was due to another venue running the same day ;)

Well done :) . I should have been smart enough to transfer my entries to VV had I twigged it was on, but we might have looked very scruffy and un-blinged in comparison! ;)

I really do adore that first pic of Fig in the warm up... He's really turning into something super special. I mean he was always special, but ever more so looking.

And CS is a legend even if the PL was a bit of a dark joke from start to finish.

Lol! Sorry Gamebird! You should have come, would have been nice to put a name to a face. I wouldn't worry about the bling, we're known for being OTT with it (and we love it!) but honestly, there are as many non blingers about :)

Thanks JFTD :) He really was super yesterday. Was so pleased with his warm up, and although the walk still went tight (more so in first than second test) he didn't show any tension in the Medium (can forgive him tension in the AM!). So hopefully, that outing has instilled a little more confidence for him!

Snort at PL comment. Probably the weirdest set of PM's I've ever had the displeasure of reading ;)

They are looking brilliant. My friend who has racehorses couldn't believe they were tb's!
PS are you holding your reins differently to normal and if so why?

Fab report as ever girls!

Hope you haven't been feeding your pet internet stalker, always a worry :(

Onwards and upwards where next?!

Oh wow they look amazing. Love that you went to the gallops in your dressage saddles!

Hah! Not much choice. Comfier than it looks but neither of us can get our stirrups any higher!

Fab report as ever girls!

Lol! Just a couple of regular BD competitions for them both, then Regionals and Area Festivals!

Love the photo of PS in her "cape"! Boys looking fab as always, best forgetting the PL sooner rather than later though...

Great photos... here's a funny fact... my OH rides a chestnut filly who is a half sister to CS most mornings at work... he has several relatives in newmarket by the looks of it!

Have you seen his page? http://docs.tattersalls.com/cat/october2/2006/836.pdf

He is pretty well bred - was a 32,000 guineas yearling. Mine was a 165,000 guineas yearling, sadly no good at dressage though!

I just like the fact that you have two ex racehorses doing well at dressage, but they aren't just random cast offs, they are very well bred racehorses with good black type families. Just goes to show that they were bred to be athletes.

I love that photo of Fig posing at the gallops - so cute! He looks fantastic, so chunky and muscled up.
CS is so preeetty, sounds like he is really settling in at this level now

My OH said that if he told his boss that the chestnut filly is out of the same dam that has produced a high level dressage horse, he would probably have a heart attack. She is a buzzy little thing that doesn't strike you as 'sport horse' at all.

I find the little article really charming! :) I'd love to know what CS's associations from his racing days think of him now.

generally really pleased, if surprised lol! I don't think they were sure how he would take to it given the napping and rearing................i sometimes think his old owners think i'm bonkers for carrying on with him lol!

I've been following you guys on facebook, and I'm so glad Pea has had a positive experience after the fiasco that was the PL!
Onwards and upwards.

Looking good.

Can I ask, did you go out to buy an ex-racehorse for dressage (both of you?) or did you just happen upon both of them? If you went looking, what was it you looked for in them? As obviously not all Thorouhgbreds naturally lend themselves to the higher dressage levels, so has it been a case of a lot of incredibly hard work, or were they chosen because of their slightly more 'natural' ability (as well as a lot of hard work, obviously)? Have always wondered, so thought I would ask :)

with CS i specifically wanted an ex racer. With Fig we looked at a few other adverts, if i remember correctly an Arab x WB and a few irish sorts but did mainly look at ex racers again.

we trawled hundreds of ads, because as you say, not many TB's lend themselves naturally to dressage.
It had to be short, uphill, well set on neck, good legs, good feet before we would even delve any deeper. Hundreds were crossed off the list for being downhill, too long, too run up and greyhoundy or having terrifying feet/legs.

how they move lose is VERY important. they need to be naturally supple and spring up off the ground, and float even round corners. They need to show the ability to passage and to extend, to canter in balance and to do a clean change when changing direction.

anything that moved in a tight or stiff way, couldn't hold its balanced or couldn't change was again crossed off as a no go.

we specifically looked for a TB that used its body like a good WB and would not have settled for anything less as there is no point, its setting you both up to become stressed sore and disappointed.

Ok genuine/silly question, why not get a warmblood then, (if you wanted one that used itself like a WB)?
Was it for the challenge of re-training, price or just to give an ex-racer a home?

Sorry don't want this to be negative, I'm just interested as my small forays into BD have been with a very non-typical horse, but then she wasn't bought for dressage...

all 3.
I love the heart of the TB, ok CS can be a nappy so and so but when he wants to do it, he will give you 100%.
Budget was limited.
I really think some of these horses get used up and spat out by the industry without enough life skills to secure a future.

Ive had WB before, both old fashioned and more modern and the dilemma i generally face is that because of my arthritis i cannot ride a very wide horse every day.
The very modern, narrow, tall ones seem to break. Everyone i know with a very modern sort, has had a catalogue of injuries.
The very modern mare i had broke (SJ'er) so it doesnt fill me with confidence!

i do like giving the under dog a chance and i like the re-training of them.

for the next one we are half heartedly looking at akhal tekes!

Firstly, well done, I have been following you on FB and they both look fab. But why I quoted you, is that I totally agree with what you are saying about WB's. They don't suit everyone, I personally have never got on with them, I am a small rider with longer legs than average for height so can more than manage a warmblood, however I have bad hips and so wide horses are a total no go. Tarquin's brother was a full Welsh D and got to PSG (the first full native to), he was Welsh D x TB and could really move and as narrow enough for me. His mind was not upto the job, but I've done well enough on a ID x Arab, ex-racer who did his first BD just 4 weeks after his last race and subsequent sale at Ascot and my current boy who is a Connie. I only compete at the lower levels but have never thought my horse was passed over for a warmblood, it may change further up the levels. Most of time we beat the warmbloods, it's the hairy cobs I have to watch out for! Plus most of the warmbloods that my friends have seem to be lame a lot or have totally rubbish feet!

Thanks for the reply!

Never ridden a WB (that I can think of, and now thinking that that is weird :o), but for my next horse (when my show horse is retired) it will be along the Arab/TB lines as this is what I love.
My dream would be to compete a pure bred Arab in more than just a show ring, beauty and power!

Love your reasons and for your honesty about why you got an ex-racer! I also would never buy a very large or wide horse, though that's because I have midget legs so I need something narrower or smaller ;).

I think you should get a Hackney next, I'd love to see what you could do with Topaz ;) as all the dressage'y people I know seem to think she will do well in the sport.

x x

Hackney and saddlebred are on the list lol!

Obviously not all warmbloods break, and NMT and myself are incredibly careful and professional in how we work and produce any horse, but tbh over the last six months I've seen so any people's hearts broken over a mega, but broke, horse, I've very much lost faith.
