Preparing for a tough winter!!

We are on diy livery so feilds etc are up to the yo but I've so far been slowly building up the one that's on wood pellets bed so I have a big banks and a stock in my space for him really going into winter

I had my retired mare pts this morning as she had bad arthritis in her stifle and I am moving the elephant into her stable so I've got his wood pellet bed to add.yo her wood pellets bed so it's going to be huge.
Have all her rugs to get washed reproofed and stored and short out her tack space to clear it.

The one on straw is moving up to the elephants stable, I've cleared out his bed now it's the pressure washing the mats and clearing it for the next horse, not mine I'm staying with two for a while, and putting a nice new straw bed in his new stable.

All I need to do now is buy clippers.

Don't forget fire wood.

It needs to be seasoned for at least 12 months.

I'm trying to arrange for the purchase of an artic load of timber in the round which will then be cut and split. That is a job (with a machine) that I don't mind and find very satisfying. Not so sure about the stacking though!

Slightly confused- big hugs. Sorry to hear about your old horse. Nice to let them go now when it's warmer with sun on their backs than leaving it til winter I always think but tough non the less xx
Dry rot.... Not my department ;)

I sold the horse, lorry, everything..that's me sorted for winter by the fire with a book and wine !!!! Sorry couldn't resist!!!

haha! Wise move :)

I only have two ponies now, they live out, next to the house, so that's as easy as I get it, that's a holiday for me after years of 20-30 horses to do.

Think about your water supply and any anti-freezing preparations you should make.
Get them lagged and insulated covers made for outside taps.

Hose pipes if you use them - get the expandable (and expendable) ones that shrink, they are self emptying and can easily be stored inside way better than struggling with draining rubber hoses.

Buy rock salt - we get it by the sack full at hardware stores.

Snow shovel, and yak trax or boot grips for ice, oh and snow pants - pessimistic in most parts of the UK perhaps, but you never know ;)

I would go nuts if I didn't have my heated water tanks, my yak-trax and my snow pants :)

Thank you, I wasn't going to leave her till winter and she couldn't walk that would have been cruel.
Her feild mate stood with us, the sun came out and it was lovely and relaxed.

Must send my rugs off for washing for the big one!! A job for the weekend! Little one just needs a turnout- found a bargain on ebay so will grab that today. Got our pallet of wood pellets already. Hay is supplied by our yard owner. Taps are already lagged and winter field is rolled and resting ready for winter.
