Preparing for horse ownership...help!

I'm preparing to get my first horse in another year or so but i'm stuck with livery. How do you plan where to keep a horse when you don't know when you'll actually be getting one? Do i just have to resign myself to finding somewhere and paying for it to stay empty till i find the right horse however long it may take? What have other people done? Thanks

I wanted to be on a particular yard, so when a stable came free, I took it, but didn't have a horse.
I'd been to see loads, but hadn't found the right one, then within a month, I'd found the horse I wanted and 14 years later we haven't looked back.
I wouldn't take on paying for a stable if I wasn't properly looking for a horse though.

Thank you. I'd ideally like grass livery at a yard or even just rent a field somewhere (I'm planning on getting a hardy pony if at all possible) so i suppose i'll give it a year then snap up one i find horse or no horse. Thanks again. There's so much to think about and I want to make sure I'm really ready.
