Hi everyone, I need some advice with the above mentioned.

I have a just turned 7 year old Welsh D gelding. He is a purebred even though he is not particularly chunky.

Firstly - how do you rate his confirmation in general and how would he compare with other welshs in the ring?

And what can I do to make him look his best? He has angular quarters which I know will be his downfall - is there any exercises that you recommend to build up this area?

It is only a local shows, but I want to do him justice. He has a very much "look at me" going on so hopefully that might help! Lol

Aiming for Welsh class and novice horse as it will be his first show.

Here is a bunch of photos of him.

Thanks for reading and any advice will be useful.

This is him today

On the lunge last week

I don't have many photos of us ridden but I'll hopefully get some this weekend

And just general ones

I don't know anything about showing native ponies, but I would like to say its nice to see a native who isn't as fat as a pig. He looks a very smart chap.

He will probably be lighter in bone than others D's out there, but not sure how many others you will come across at a local show :)
Just give it a go, see how you get on :)

I'm getting itchy fingers for mane & tail pulling :D

It depends on how "professional" you want to look, I had a d for a while and did a few affiliated shows with him, I took him to a producer for turnout tips and the amount of trimming shocked me!
He looks absolutely lovely and fit which is pleasant to see - though I would be prepared to hear that he needs more 'condition' for showing (unfortunately)

Have a crack, see what the judges say! Or contact a local producer/ show rider to you for tips? They may be able to help you out :)

Yes! They are well preened ponies for the ring aren't they :D Pulled tails which are shaped shorter and not banged straight for starters :D

yes there isn't a lot I can do about that :-p haha I could just fluff his feathers up a bit?!

Fingers crossed :-)

Haha I love his mane! It hasn't been touched for 3 years!

Thanks for the info and nice words - I'm not really prepared to put more weight on him really, keeping him healthy comes first.

But we'll give it a go and see how he does :-)

He looks v smart. I've only just ventured into the world of showing and I don't know about his type but my tip from our first outing is, as well as correct tack and turnout, work on your individual show. One that shows him at his best. That seemed to be the clincher.

Feed him a shed load of protein rich food and trot up steep hills to improve his back end. Pull the mane, lightly pull the top of the tail and feather the bottom of it.

He has a lovely head and at local level you will do well enough just make sure your schooling is spot on.

I have a native (connemara) and I try not to touch his mane too much, although lots tidy the manes so they look very smart (and usually place well regardless of the lack of "natural" look!). I use Show Ready products on my boy from www.showready.co.uk and have to say they are fab. Really help get him clean and last ages, very convenient for show day touch ups too!

Unless you have a hairy, then there is very little 'natural state' about any of the M&M turnout lol

One of my YO's Connemara stallions is sponsored by Show Ready - great stuff!!

Fells, Dales, Highlands, Dartmoor, exmoors and Shetlands have very little done to them.in regards to trimming up but the Welsh sections, new forests and connies do.

hence my 'unless you have a hairy' :)
Although, they are all very strategically trimmed to some degree

As a fellow D owner to another D owner pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease trim that mane and tail!!!!!!!! :D And don't forget to trim his beard (and whiskers if you wish) How big is he??? He doesn't look to bad in your 3rd photo being ridden. Also get them socks gleaming white!!!!!!! Plenty of purple shampoo and chalk! !!
