Hi I’m just wondering how much everyone pays for their prescription from their vet please? I have 2 ponies on Prascend, I pay £16 for a prescription with a repeat x 2 on it so works out cheaper to buy online, but I’ve got a cat who’s recently been prescribed ‘thyronorm’, and am a shocked to discover my practise is charging me more than twice what I can get it on line for? I’ve asked how much a is for a prescription and it’s £15, so unless they’ll do me a repeat like I get from my horse vet, I’ll be no better off buying on line, the receptionist couldn’t confirm if I can get it on repeat, she said that’s up to the vet. I’m just a bit miffed that with the costs of everything soaring, I feel like us pet owners are being exploited a little or am I just being a whinging Minnie?

I used to pay £18 which was a prescription for 6 months and lasted for as many bute as I need during that time.

I used to buy 2 x 100 sachets in the 6 months as that was all I needed. They used to allow clients to price match against the cheapest prescription websites. I used to use E-vet as bute was 65p a sachet and I'd been paying £1.15 at my vets for the same!

I used to ring up, say I wanted another prescription, would quote the website, the receptionist would go on the site to confirm I was telling the truth with the price and would get it authorised by the vet. I would then collect or they'd leave in my manger if they visited our yard for another client.

My small animal vet charges £25 per prescription for my dog's heart medicines.

My horse vet charges me £15 per prescription for Prascend.

Wonder why there’s such a big difference? Am I alone in thinking it’s a bit out of order for owners to be charged so much for prescriptions? I’d be ok with paying an extra couple of quid on meds from the vet and not bother with a prescription, but finding out I’m being charged double, £17.78 internet, compared to £37.84 from vet for exactly the same drug is a bit tough to take tbh?

Nothing. My vet here in France makes no separate charge. Horse wormers need a prescription, so I pop along and one of the practise vets writes up the paperwork and the receptionist hands it out.I pay only for the wormer.
The dog and the cat have been regular patients, some drugs are obtainable on site: if not, they give me a prescription to take down to the local chemist. Drug/ ointment costs have been between 2.50 and 9 euros each.

I rejoice at how lovely both the horse and the senior vets are. When the cat got knocked over a couple of months ago we decided that she needed in-treatment to rehydrate her. But once beginning to recover they couldn't get her to eat soft food. I had warned them that she is really picky, so they phoned to ask me to do a daily visit with things she might eat and to feed them to her myself. They gave me the run of the premises despite our Covid rules. The cat fully recovered.

I had a cat on thyronorm and I just said to the vet that I wanted to buy a large bottle that would last for 6 months. They were fine with that and it was much cheaper online, even with a £12 prescription charge.

Small animal vet charges £27 with 2 repeats for Metacam. It then costs me about £17 a bottle instead of £60 so definitely worth it.

Equine vet charges £25 for a prescription for Danilon. I buy it online for about £75 so it costs me £100 a box instead of £120 from him.

My cat vet will write me a prescription for two big bottles of thyronorm. They last about six months and are cheaper than the small bottles. But I have to ask for the big bottles specifically. Prescription is about £16 on top but still works out cheaper than buyer from the vet. I have a feeling you can only get 6 months worth at a time? I also get prescription for my boys Inflacam - it has about six repeats. Much cheaper than buying 100 sachets from the equine vet!

I’ll look into getting the 100ml next time as I suspect that will be cheaper even with the prescription charge. Thanks
