Prescription cost for dogs

My dog is on long term medication for a heart condition. I have been buying it from my vets for a year now as my insurance was paying the majority of the cost. The insurance has now ran out for that condition, so have been comparing the cost for medication online. It is considerably cheaper to buy online, but my vets charge £24 per item for prescription for 3 months plus a consult every 3 months, he has 2 items . Is this the norm? Does anyone else buy regular prescriptions?
Thanks

Sounds on the steep end of normal tbh. Ours is £18 for as many meds as needed per condition, rather than per item, with reviews every 3-6 months depending on the condition. A reduced repeat consultation fee is charged for these rather than a full initial consultation fee.

Thanks,
That sounds more like it. Is that for a 3 month prescription?
Have always used the same vets, but they got bought out last year, so maybe time to shop around.

Not for a dog but cat but same prices apply. £12 a prescription, they used to discount multiple prescriptions but not anymore.
A prescription does 100ml/100 tablets for what I need so just over 3 months supply, but he only needs a check up (including blood tests) every 6 months.

So you pay for the vet to write a prescription or is that per refill? I would be majorly annoyed if my vet charged that sort of money to write/fax in a script. That being said, I work in a vet practice and our doctors will write or fax a script for a regular client and patient. But, for most conditions they need to see the pet every six months.

Mine charge £16 for a written prescription which lasts 6 months (written as 6 repeats) When my old dog was on multiple medication my vet kindly put them all on one prescription so the saving was huge.

Have you asked your vet to price match? I hadn’t thought of it until the receptionist suggested it, but I picked up a box or Prascend yesterday and paid £60 less than last time!

Yes, this cost is just for the prescription, I then need to buy the meds online. It still gives me a saving compared to my vets prices on the meds, but I was a bit shocked by the cost and now I feel like I’m being really ripped off .
