Hi All

Just a quick question. I'm trying to order Danilon via the internet and have requested a prescription from the vet who will only prescribe 2 boxes. He has been on Danilon over a year now so it's not a new drug to him. I am fed up of being ripped off by vets so just want to query if this is normal as they said it is outlined by the Royal College of Vets that they are not able to prescribe more

I don't know about Danilon, but with Pergolide my vet wasn't able to prescribe more than one pack. He did put one repeat on it so effectively I got 2 packs with the same prescription (and charge). Worth asking if they can do a repeat on it, but I wouldn't be surprised about regulations, as they really should examine a horse on long term bute from time to time to see whether there are any side effects or it is coping well.

This might help clarify things:

From the RCVS website

"Prescriptions for POM-V medicines may be issued only for animals under the care of the prescribing veterinary surgeon and following his or her clinical assessment of the animals"

"The Veterinary Medicines Regulations do not define the phrase 'under his care' and the RCVS has interpreted it as meaning that:
a.the veterinary surgeon must have been given the responsibility for the health of the animal or herd by the owner or the owner's agent
b.that responsibility must be real and not nominal
c.the animal or herd must have been seen immediately before prescription or,
d.recently enough or often enough for the veterinary surgeon to have personal knowledge of the condition of the animal or current health status of the herd or flock to make a diagnosis and prescribe
e.the veterinary surgeon must maintain clinical records of that herd/flock/individual

Hmmm the way I interpret that is that they have to give them a regular check up, which he gets every 6 months (that is their standard check over) I understand they need to be certain he's ok but they happily prescribe him 6 months worth until they realise i'm no longer going to pay their over inflated prices
