Preserving horseshoes

I have one of the shoes from the lovely mare that I was sharing until she sadly had to be pts recently, it's got a bit rusty so I was wondering what's the best way to remove the rust and stop it rusting again? It's really scratched up and worn but I want the scratches and marks to stay. Thanks x
 
My OH made me a sign for my boy with his shoes and he soaked them in Cola the rust of then painted them and put on a coat of polish... No idea what kind of polish though!
He just used your basic hammerite metal paint :)
 
I'm not sure how you get the rust off as the two I did weren't that rusty before I started faffing. Maybe just a wire brush would do it or cola (as suggested above).

I painted mine with hammerite metal paint then glued on the twiddly bits afterwards. They took ages to do, mainly waiting for each coat to dry, but I was quite pleased with the end result.

I don't know about the rust, but I always paint mine with silver spray paint. They look really lovely and natural:)
