pressure halter-dually or richard maxwell

If the horse is resisting what you want the pressure should be on. But it's pressure. Its not yanking its head off and it's not as much pressure as you can exert. It's mild pressure and you must move with the horse to continue to exert the same pressure until it moves forward even a tiny bit.

You should not use a pressure halter without the correct instruction.

This exactly, the idea is you put the pressure on and you take it off at the precise second you get the desired behaviour, even if it is just standing still rather than fighting you. I have had immense success with these on youngsters but you do have to be very sensitive to feel in order to control the pressure. I would never tie up in one of these nor in the dually on the training ring.

OP, I have used both types and still do, I prefer the dually for strong bargy types but the rope halter for everything else. I had a pony that reared a lot years ago, but he used to be trying to 'get' the handler when he did it. I got a IH associate out to him and she cured it completely very quickly using a dually. He literally reared twice with her and has never done it since, admittedly she too him away for 3 weeks to start him after the first 2 rears but she said he displayed none of that behaviour with her and I believe that. I think often we send the wrong signals and the behaviour starts then becomes a habit.

They may have their place, but imo too many just jump straight in with how to stop the behavior displayed, instead of looking at the root cause of it.

ffion because if its not done properly when the horse rears they can end up falling over backwards. I agree with your posts as well as some of the other postsers.

Op, make sure your getting help from people who are experienced with youngsters as well as people who knlow what they are doing with pressure halters if your going to use one. They are really cruel if not used correctly.

Well it should only be done properly. There is no point doing it if you are going to release the pressure on a rear. I see what you mean but it's not correct to release the pressure. I rehabilitated a horrendously behaved mare using a be nice halter and she did previously go over back wards loading. She never ever did with the halter however because the correct ground work was done.

But recent other threads have really made me think and now I echo what Amy May said. Get some help with this youngster. Don't try to solve this yourself OP.
