What is best for relieving pressure? i was told to get a prolite but then was told that they're not really rated very well and it would be good to get 'Nuumed' saddlecloth- but i have no idea, what is best to get?

The yard where mine is at is a BHS teaching yard and they use Polypads as a matter of course as they say it cushions the back and protects it. Personally I don't like them as they can be a bit bulky under the saddle.

Yes, I've seen the Le Mieux sheepskin ones - fab but pricey! Also there's the gel pads if you've got a slippy saddle and also have a cushioning effect, plus I've seen a mixture of the gel pad + sheepskin somewhere but can't remember where, but not tried it.

Poly pads are OK if you have a wide range of sizes - both saddles and horses. They are the best bet for making a poorly fitting saddle better. They also pad the weight of an unbalenced rider better. As such I would think they are perfect for a riding school environment where it is difficult to individually fit every single saddle all the time and where the riders may be less experienced.

Although I have one - nattily embrodered with his name from a show soemwhere - I don't really like them for individual use. They are a bit "one size fits all". They are also prone to slipping because there is no point of attachment to the saddle.

But assuming your saddle is reasonably well fitted and your horse doesn't carry loads of different riders then I would highly reccommend sheepskin. I have tried the gel pads but my experience has been that the horses do really sweat under them.

Personally I have Bartl pads. But Le Meiux is also really well rated on the site. Don't opt for the cheaper fake sheepskin. Poor ned will sweat under all that nylon and they don't last as long. You can use a sheepskin half pad over a thin numnah or dressage pad is you prefer. They have the same effect, are cheaper than the full pads, and you can have various colours underneath. Persoanlly I don't go for the ones which pad all the way down the flaps either as I think it lessens the contact of your leg with the horse. But that is just my view.

thankyou for the replies i think im going to buy a le mieux, i tried my friends today and my girl was so much happier- really supple through the back and not rushing at all! i was considering treeless really seriously but this seems to have really made her a lot happier, what size would i need for a 17" saddle? i tried a full/large and it seemed a little (but not much) big for her- and i feel maybe the size down would be too small? it was one with foam inserts by velcro underneath

I've tried an assortment of pads over the years but both my horses are much happier with the 'platinum' range of sheepskin pads, ie. the very best quality (of course!).

I've got several Mattes and also Stephens sheepskin pads. One horse has a 17.5" saddle and the other an 18" and I do swap them around occasionally depending on what's in the wash but I always buy large as I would rather it be on the large size rather than slightly too small.
