pressure sore on highest point of withers

Has anyone ever had any experience of pressure sores on the withers? I have cut a hole in one of my horse's rugs so it is now open to the air but I need some other system of raising the next rug both to keep wound dry and horse warm. Any ideas please

my high wither tb got one in same place smothered it in green oils, and stitched lots of padding on rug, been fine since

Mine had one from seam on bib (within 1 day) smeared it in Dermobion and it lifted off fine - not used nylon bib since on vets advice and never had a problem since. (Vet reckons he sees loads of this with lycra hoods/bibs as they make the horse warm and then the skin softens)

What padding did you use? I have used foam but that is still rubbing. Treating him with Fuciderm now to try and heal the sore. 28 year old Arab - at least he doesn't mind being kept in in this horrid weather.
