I have a huge task on the horizon, getting the grey hairy muddy monster in a suitable state to clip. It's done a superb job of scrubbing itself into mud over the winter and there is no way that my blades will get through the amount of fluff easily without a serious bath. I don't have access to a washroom sadly but I am tempted to borrow a pressure washer to try and get the filthy sod clean. Has anyone used a pressure washer on their horse? I have a bad shoulder at the moment so scrubbing isn't a good option. The pony is stupid and daft enough that he'll stand for it anyway.
 
I wouldn't use a pressure washer on a horse there too severe and I don't think many horses would tolerate it tbh.

Warm water and fairy liquid will do the job well enough to clip.
 
Definitely don't use a pressure washer! I wouldn't use Fairy liquid either but a decent shampoo should do the job. In the good old days we used elbow grease and it does work, if you use enough of it.
 
Ok, thanks. He maybe waiting a while then. I can't groom well at the moment (suspect rotator cuff injury) so elbow grease isn't an option sadly. 😦

I may even have to train son up to clip, which he is desperate to do as I'm not sure I will manage. At least the nag goes nowhere so you may well get hatchet stylie pics!! 😁

I just suggested the fairy liquid as op said she can't scrub and thought it would lift the dirt with less work involved, it's not something I would use all the time for washing a horse.
 
I have never seen a horse pressure washed but they do cows like it all the time. The show dairy cows have a much finer coat then most horses but saying that I would not do it to my horse. I am sure if you googled it you will find someone doing it.
 
I had looked at buying a horse shower but the water pressure at the fields wouldn't be strong enough and tbh I don't bath much anyway so it isn't worth the money.
 
sometimes when pressure washing I use it to clean a few bits off my hands. It really hurts. Wouldn't put it anywhere near a horse.
 
Put it this way .... one sunny summer day I decided to power wash my decking, I was wearing flip flops and my feet got quite dirty. When I was done I figured I’d just wash the muck off my feet.

I literally cut my feet open,

What I thought I was doing I have no idea. But on the basis of that I would advise not washing your horse with one 😜

I know the answer to this, you should have bathed him a few weeks ago when it was 20 degrees... 😝
I used a pressure washer on a turnout rug and it ripped it!
 
Eeekk at some these comments. I've never used one so didn't know how powerful they are. Husband and kids to be employed set to work tomorrow. Yep, hindsight is wonderful, one should have got busy when the weather was good! I was worried that it may turn the other way though! I would have felt very mean then. Hopefully tonight's rain may clean him!
 
To be fair there’s pressure washers and pressure washers. My boss bought a cheap one and it had less pressure than my normal hose at home 😳 Then we have one at home (not ours but the farms) that I can barely hold if I point it at something!!
 
I assume some pressure washers have a low setting, my friend had one that didn't have much more oomph than a hose. She used it on cows and horses regularly with no ill effect.
What about one of the jet attachments that fit onto a hosepipe?
 
We used to use one on the ponies (sorry ponies :)) turned down to the lowest pressure setting and with nice warm water. All loved it after getting used to the noise.
Never tried on a horse, they are not as forgiving as ponies ;)
 
A bit like Ihatethatwork …………. did much the same. Hurt like hell & took the nail varnish off my toe nails.
 
I think you can try to use a jet wash for car as they made to clean your car with delicate mode but choose the lower power. I think that it will be a good idea and your horse will be clean. But if you see that your horse has some discomfort you should better stop.
 
You can get pressure washers for different jobs, such as decking or cars and they have different forces. I know because my OH and me spent a thrilling afternoon in B&Q picking one a couple of weeks ago. Re pony, I probably wouldn’t but I personally know someone who jet-washes his ponies and cows before a show, they don’t seem to mind it tbh!

From a few days ago I'm thinking about buying a pressure washer but when I search it online I get also a jet washer, now I'm a little bit confused. Though I read some reviews from gardeningfacts.org, and get some idea. Maybe you are right.
 
The pony jet looks identical to one I got off Amazon about a year ago for £10.99, and I use that as it's just an adjustable spray head that you can shampoo too. It works well but doesn't get deep into the coat, from my experience.
If you're prepared to throw money at it, pre-covid quite a few travelling pony spa's had been set up where they come out with a 3.5-tonne lorry setup as a wash box with inbuilt sauna/drying lights, and some people offer clipping with it.
 
My experience - you have absolute control of a power washer. You just reduce water pressure at the mains tap and/or the tap it's connected to. It still works, just with less power.

It makes me a bit sad when one of my old threads about a horse no longer here suddenly pops back up.
I expect he’s up there absolutely caked in mud and quite smug about it. Xx
