Does anyone feed a joint supplement as preventative measures for thier youngster..??

I'm thinking on giving my 17hh gangly Oldenburg one but don't want to totally waste my money if there is no point.

If you do, which one do you feed..?? I'm thinking Superflex..?? By NAF.

Any thoughts..??

I feed mine Maxaflex she's also an oldenburg some may think it unnecessary but IMO they work to prevent not to fix so feed to maintain and I chose Maxaflex as its largely naturally derived chondroitin and glucosamine from green lipped muscles

I toyed with the idea of using one for my 4yo as he started work, but decided that with a good diet and appropriate work he shouldn't really need one - if they work at all ;). I also intend to keep him barefoot, so that will reduce concussion a lot. I used to feed suppleaze gold, as it seems to be one of the better ones, and not that expensive. I found that the glucosamine irritated my TB's gut, though, so would probably choose one without glucosamine if I were to use one again.

Both of mine get linseed for the omega oils.

Never heard of that stuff - thanks will take a look on the net.

I feed GLM for old tendon injuryy, helps brilliantly. Don't buy from equine source as many have fillers in & charge a lot, get pure product from a health food company. Also use their glucosamine / chondroitin supplement for horses.

I am not sure how preventative glucosamine is. I understand it slows the progress of arthritis. I believe it is linked to causing insulin resistance and cause stomach irritation too. You may want to research it some more. I read an article about it recently but cannot remember where. I am definitely no expert on this so please do not assume this is correct. I am just posting really to say check it is preventative and if so check the side effects. It is one thing giving something with side effects to an older horse that would otherwise suffer than a youngster with no problems yet.

When i bought mine she was very underweight and typical wb tall and gangerly and needed to grow into herself a bit, ive found it really helped with the right diet and has made her put fantastic condition on, Helps as my 26year old cob is also on the glucosamine for his arthritis and has been for about 4 years now has worked a treat. sorry to hijack thread :)

Chees folks will look into the gluco side effects, defo don't want to cause problems for him when there nothing there to really fix in the first place.
