I do the horses before work in the morning. I get up and shower, tie my hair back and then leave for the yard. I try and wear clean gloves as I find horse smell really sticks to my hands! If its particular muddy ill wear a pair of surgical gloves under my regular ones.

I get to work, wash, change clothes but my hands and hair can still smell.

Any tips of stopping hands from smelling horsey or getting rid of the smell? The soap at work just doesn't shift it! My hand cream helps but the linger is still there! Also any tips for refreshing hair?

Thanks x

Have a toiletry bag at work exactly for this sort of thing - also wash your hands before leaving the yard.

Have a good liquid soap at work to wash your hands with, and also a nail brush to scrub your nails with, and some nice body spray to freshen everything else up.

I've always done as you - expect I would change at the yard, not in work. Also my yard clothes were clean every day, so this helped.

I agree with changing at the yard, dont drag your horse clothes into work ;)

As for hair, get some of these -

can get them in tesco, boots etc - just like deoderant for hair ;) Also great for use between washes to get rid of the grease bomb look. I swear by them ;) and they smell delicious all day long.

Do you use straw bedding? If so, that's the problem - I found that the amonia horsey smell really does seem to cling!

I now semi deep litter on shavings (or anything but straw!). I skip out each morning and at the weekend remove the wet. You need to get the bed nice and deep so the wee doesn't soak up to the surface.

If you have to use straw, keep your mucking out gear regularly washed and cover your tied back hair with a hat of some sort and wash this regularly (weekly) before the smell builds up and transfers to your hair. You could invest in a pair of farmers overalls and wash these weekly.

I've never had any "horsey" smell using shavings, and have even on occasion skipped out in civvies. Your hands may not smell as bad as you think, but once you get that horsey smell in your nose everything you sniff seems to smell!

Could you shower after mucking out rather than before, or do you call at the yard on your way to work?

Cant really change at the yard. I have to park at the bottom of a hill and then walk up a muddy field to the yard. Have a gate to open and close to get my car out too so would end up filthy I think.

We only have cold water at the yard so I try and wash my hands before I go but the water is starting to get freezing!

I have used the baptise stuff in the past, the coconut one I think? I will get some more when I'm next shopping :) x

I muck out my friends stable who is on straw. The horse in question is quite wet and smelly but cant really ask my friend to change her bedding to help me. Although she could muck out better on the days she does...

I go to the yard on the way to work. If I went home after I'd get stuck in hideous traffic, plus I have to be there for 8. There is a shower at work, its not a great one and showering at work feels a little weird but I could try I suppose.

I dont mind the smell of horse at all, but I dont think everyone else around is too keen! I probably dont smell as bad as I think but I am paranoid. I have washed my hands about 8 times today and had 3 applications of Soap and Glory hand food and I think the smell has just about gone...

Get yourself some disposable gloves and use them. Also make sure you use an anti bacterial hand wash not the 'poncy nice smelling' ones as they do not do the job....just smell nice for a while.
Get a 'buff' for your head/hair, change yard clothes daily and have decent washing gear at work.
I cycle to work so can be quite sweaty by the time I get here and I have a wash bag of stuff and have a quick wash down. This does me fine for the rest of the day.

There's your answer then. Perfect.

I also did this for a year - and worked brilliantly. I simply rolled out of bed in the mornings, did the horses then got scrubbed at work.

Ill give it a go. I cant wash my hair at work as its really long and a pain in the bum to wash and dry, but ill try yhr dry shampoo. Its my hands I tend to struggle with the smell. Ill get some good antibacterial soap I think too.

I do try and wear disposable gloves but my pony is very suspicious of them and I am currently undergoing allergy testing for a reaction I keep having so want to avoid everything if possible until I have some results. xx

You cld give your hands a good wipe on leaving yard with scented baby wipes..Johsnson & johnsons ones v good. That should take an initial layer of smell off!

I can't smell it lol probably a bad thing! I have to change at work as wear scrubs so that helps, and wear sealskins gloves and yard overalls which I take off in the car. Also handy hint - do not put on moisturiser before going to horses - everything sticks to your skin as I have just noticed as I got to work!

I would be refusing to muck out friends horse unless they swapped to wood pellets!

It is the only bedding that I can do a full wet muck out (once a week) and still go out straight after without having to wash my hair!

My husband & kids thinks its great that I no longer permanently smell of horse!

When I was on straw/paper/shavings/cardboard (i`ve tried practically every bed going!) no matter what 'protection' I wore I still had to shower/hair wash before my pub shift or else my colleagues would comment on the smell

Iv found a huge difference in smell since stopping using straw. Honestly the difference is unreal! Also another vote for batiste dry shampoo to freshen hair :)

Overalls. Good pair of rubber gloves. Hat or scarf. All good ideas. I have a stainless steel "tablet" thingy in my kitchen which removes cooking smells from hands it works on onion smells a treat. I just rub my hands on it under running water as if It was a bar of soap - it seems a bit odd but it does work!
